AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested

AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have 5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.

In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you.

Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly.

AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Cuddly and sweet! Jaxx is a 5-year-old, 16-pound Shih Tzu looking for love after a rough patch in life. He came to AFRP from the Monterey County Shelter after arriving as a neglected, matted stray. He had several dermal masses that were examined, biopsied, and were fortunately found to be benign. Currently in foster care, Jaxx is a very affectionate dog that will make a wonderful companion dog. He loves everyone he meets, and he enjoys walks by the beach, chasing toys around the yard and cuddling on the couch. He loves to bring you a toy to play tug with, and then fetch it over and over again. Jaxx gets along with dog of all sizes and genders as long as they are gentle and respectful. This is a breed that requires regular grooming. For more information about arranging a meeting with Jaxx, please fill out an online application.

Casper
Rescued from streets of Salinas after roaming as a shy, matted stray for two months, Casper is ready for his second chance! He's a 1-2 year-old, 18-pound Poodle/Terrier mix that is currently doing very well in foster care. Initially a bit timid, Casper has blossomed into a playful, smart and treat-motivated dog that learns quickly and loves belly rubs. He has a great smile and a lot of love to share with an adopter that can continue to teach him his basic obedience commands. Casper is working on his house training skills and he gets along with other small, calm dogs. He needs a home without cats or other small animals - he loves to chase them! This guy has been lost before, so a new home with a very securely fenced yard is a must. He'll do best in an adult household or a family with kids over age 12. For more about meeting or adopting Casper, please fill out an online application. At this time we are adopting to residents of Monterey County only.
Oreo
sponsor me

Named for everybody's favorite comfort cookie, Oreo is a sweet 2-year-old, 13-pound black and white Terrier mix that is ready for a loving home after suffering a traumatic injury. She came to AFRP after arriving at the Salinas Shelter with a deep laceration around her belly from a deeply embedded string or rubber band. Happily, her wound was cleaned and stitched, and she has healed beautifully in foster care. Oreo loves people and is friendly with both men and women. She's an energetic and playful dog that enjoys her toys and walks around the neighborhood. She knows her name and knows how to sit when asked. Oreo is crate trained and is doing well with her house training skills. She is good with some dogs and not with others, so a proper introduction will be key when going to a home with other canines. She is interested in chasing cats, so a feline-free household will be best for her. If you are interested in giving Oreo the safe and loving home she deserves, please fill out an online application and we'll get back to you with more information. At this time we are adopting to residents of Monterey County only.

Natalia
Like a little canine ballerina, Natalia is an elegant, long-legged and slender 4-month-old Chihuahua mix puppy looking for a loving home after a rough start in life. She weighs 3.5 pounds now, and might weigh 7-8 pounds as an adult. Natalia is one of six dogs AFRP rescued from a hoarding situation of 70 neglected dogs and puppies that ended up at the Bakersfield Shelter. Raised in foster care, Natalia is a wiggly, playful and athletic little dog that is a bit wary of strangers, but she's very affectionate once she gets to know and trust you. She gets along fine with other small dogs and with dog-savvy cats. She is working on her house training and knows how to use a potty pad. Natalia will be a good match for an adult household (no small kids) with the time to continue her training and social skills. To learn more or to arrange a meeting, please fill out an online application. At this time we are adopting to residents of Monterey County only.
Kornelius
sponsor me

Kornelius is an enthusiastic and friendly 1-year-old, 15-pound Westie Terrier mix with special needs. His vision is impaired, yet he Is easily trained, smart, loyal and sooo much fun! Kornelius came to AFRP from the Salinas Animal Shelter, and they immediately noticed that his vision was impaired and reached out to AFRP. We found Kornelius a foster home and he was evaluated by a veterinary ophthalmologist. He was born with detached retinas, and resulting glaucoma. He has some perception of light and dark. Eventually his eyes will become painful and require surgery to remove them, despite how traumatic it may sound, it is a fairly common procedure that dogs adapt to very well. He navigates the world easily, learning the layout of his foster home within a week! Kornelius has a big heart and will repay your kindness will wags by the dozens! Since he can be startled easily, a calm, adult household would be the best match. Currently he requires eye drops three times a day. For more info about meeting or adopting Kornelius, please fill out an online application. Posted 11-20-19. Clarissa is a beautiful 1-year-old, 85-pound purebred Doberman Pinscher looking for a loving home. She is a very smart, energetic and loving dog that is spayed and up to date on vaccinations. Because of her size and activity level, she will do best in an adult household with no small kids. She knows her basic obedience command and loves to play fetch. She is learning to heel while on leash. She loves to run and romp in the woods. Clarissa can come on strong with other dogs, but might be fine with a large dog with a similar energy level. She needs at least an hour of running or vigorous exercise every day. Both are up to date on shots, potty trained, affectionate, smart, sweet and eager to learn and eager to please. They are a bonded pair that truly love each other and would like to be adopted together. This is wonderful because they keep each other company when they are left alone. Both dogs are great with adults and children. Not yet tested with other dogs or cats. Sadie and Sasha are not AFRP dogs and currently live in the San Francisco area. Simon
Posted 10-8-19. Simon is a sweet and loving 58-pound pit bull terrier mix that will be 2 years old on Christmas Day, 2019. He's in need of a new home because his guardian is relocating and cannot take him along. He's a smart and silly guy that gets along great with other dogs, kids and cats. He knows his basic obedience commands and hand signals, and he's pretty reliably house trained. Simon is a healthy dog but was born with a neurological condition that causes his legs to be a little unsteady. His front legs give out from time to time, and his back legs have tremors. He can walk and run with his awkward gait, but long walks are not his thing. He also has an underdeveloped lower jaw, which gives him a big overbite - but he can eat and drink just fine. Simon is neutered and up to date on vaccines. Can you help this special dog? Simon is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in San Jose. For more information call Stephen at 408-726-7751 or email stephen.n.bishop@gmail.com
