Carie, Scott, Monica and John with Spunky, Sunshine, Max and Yappy |
|
| Many nonprofit organizations start with one or two consummate volunteers who set the tone and pace for all those who follow. For AFRP those special volunteers are Monica Rua and Carie Broecker. Monica is one of AFRP’s founders and Carie started as an AFRP volunteer in 1998, and ten years later they are still giving their time and talent in countless ways to help homeless cats and dogs. Through the years they have each served in many capacities including grant writing, fundraising, fostering sick or injured animals and mentoring staff and volunteers. They were volunteer co-executive directors until AFRP was able to hire a paid director. Monica recalls meeting Carie for the first time: I’ll never forget during the first months of AFRP when Carie walked into my garage for a volunteer interview. I asked her what type of volunteer work she was interested in and she said, “Everything!” Well, she was true to her word and she dove right in with her heart and soul, volunteering in every capacity possible. The two women have natural leadership qualities and amazing problem solving skills. They both agree that neither of them could have done for AFRP alone what the two of them were able to accomplish as a team. Many miracles have happened and many lives have been saved thanks to Carie and Monica’s drive and determination. Carie and Monica truly do represent the heart and soul of AFRP’s mission. We thank them for leading by example, and for touching the lives of thousands of homeless animals who have gotten a second chance thanks to their efforts. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of AFRP, we also celebrate Monica and Carie and all they have done to help make AFRP the successful lifesaving organization it is today. (Of course they both want to thank their husbands for all their support throughout the years. The support and talents of the men behind the women have been vital to AFRP as well!)
