Volunteer Spotlight

Jean Kane and Molly

You may have seen AFRP volunteer Jean Kane behind the wheel of her van, transporting a sick cat to a vet appointment, or passed by her on the recreation trail as she was providing a foster dog with some valuable exercise and socialization time. Since March 2004, Jean has cheerfully logged hundreds of volunteer hours for AFRP.

The enthusiasm Jean has for her work is obvious, and her huge smile is contagious. Her sense of humor keeps her grounded in situations when others might panic. Once, when transporting five kittens form the vet, all managed to escape their carrier and disappear into the corners of her van. Not one to worry, Jean calmly managed to locate each one. "The last kitten was peacefully sleeping underneath a sleeping bag," Jean recounts.

Besides her service to AFRP, Jean also regularly volunteers for CHOMP and and for Monterey County Animal Services. In fact, her two canine family members Molly (in photo) and Briscoe (too rambunctious to photograph) were both adopted from the Monterey County shelter.

"The highlight of my animal life started with the adoption of my first shelter dog twenty years ago," recalls Jean. "Helping homeless animals has been a big part of my life ever since."

When asked what advice she would give someone thinking about volunteering for AFRP, Jean would have to say the rewards are great in whatever capacity you are able to help.

"Each effort, large or small brings a dog or cat into a loving home. Joy comes equally whether walking a large dog or holding a tiny kitten."

AFRP relies on dedicated volunteers like Jean Kane to help save the lives of over 1,500 homeless dogs and cats each year. Please give us a call if you would like to become a volunteer: 831-333-0722.
