Volunteer Spotlight

Denise Stevens

Carie: Denise, why did you start volunteering with AFRP?

Denise: I wanted to contribute to the welfare of animals. I had been actively looking for an animal organization that did not euthanize animals due to time and space constraints. I found that my values are aligned with the goals of AFRP.

Carie: You are a very active adoption counselor. Tell us about that volunteer position and what you enjoy about it.

Denise: The adoption counselors take adoptable animals out to off-site adoptions several times each month. We are trained to screen potential adopters and facilitate the adoption process. As an adoption counselor, I not only represent AFRP, but I am also able to be an advocate for all animals and am in a position to help educate the public about a variety of animal issues. People often talk to us about behavior issues they are having with their pet, and I like to think that I'm helping to keep those animals from being turned into a shelter by providing information and referrals.

Carie: What is the most rewarding part of volunteering for AFRP?

Denise: That?s easy. The animals. These beautiful, innocent animals offer so much love and foster such a feeling of joy and appreciation of life. I feel like I am personally contributing to the goal of ?no more homeless animals?.

Carie: Do you have any advice for other animal lovers who may want to volunteer?

Denise: It is easy to think we don?t have enough time. We all juggle many responsibilities. There are so many ways to contribute and to feel connected to the success of the achievements of the organization. You can help with transportation, work at events, work in the office, or really get hands on and do some fostering. One may wonder how just one person could possibly change anything or make things better. Because I volunteer, at the end of the day when I look at myself in the mirror, I know I am making a difference.

Thank you, Denise, for all your hard work and dedication!
