AFRP Medical Fund

AFRP fills a niche in the community by rescuing animals from shelters that would otherwise be euthanized. The animals that need our help the most are those that will never make it to the adoption floor due to major or minor medical needs.

AFRP spends $350,000 annually to provide major and minor medical care for the 1,900 animals we rescue each year.

The dogs and cats featured on this page were scheduled to be put down because they were injured strays that could not be put up for adoption. AFRP is only able to help save the lives of homeless animals with medical needs with the support of generous donors like you. Thank you!

Examples of common procedures and their associated costs to AFRP:

FHO (hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis, fracture) $750-$2,000
Parvovirus treatment $500-$1,000
Amputation $500-$1,000
Pinning (broken bones) $800-$1,600
Broken Pelvis $800-$2,000
Dental/Extractions $300-$600

Gunther is a senior black lab that was found as a stray and taken to the Salinas Animal Shelter. He has arthritis and a neurological problem that make it difficult for him to get up from a laying down position. Other than that he is relatively happy and healthy. An AFRP volunteer who owns 80 acres in Oklahoma has offered to give Gunther a home for the rest of his golden years. There is a therapy pool on the property which will be wonderful for Gunther. He will also get a full work up and evaluation for treatment at the University of Oklahoma to extend his life and make him more comfortable. Gunther is being transported by another AFRP volunteer on Wednesday April 16 in the AFRP van. Updates on his new life to follow!

Rainbow is a two year old kitty with a leg injury. She was most likely hit by a car before being picked up by animal control and taken to the shelter. The vet tried splinting Rainbow's leg in hopes that it would heal, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The vet also tried pinning her leg, but that was not successful either. Rainbow finally had to have her leg amputated. She's recovering and is currently available for adoption.

Betty is senior Chihuahua mix that was found running loose in Salinas with multiple wounds on her face and a huge gash on the back of her neck. Her eyes were swollen and bloody and she had punctures on her face, chest and limbs. We assume she was mauled by another dog or wild animal. The Salinas Shelter provided immediate care for her and then she was transferred to an AFRP foster home for follow up care. She is fully recovered and is now available for adoption.

Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Flower is a two year old kitty that arrived at the shelter with a terrible skin condition. She had been trapped as a feral cat, but is actually very friendly. She could not be put up for adoption at the shelter because of her skin issues. Her skin was severely crusty, cracked, and infected. We found out flower has a severe flea allergy which is easily prevented with regular flea control medication. She looks great now! She is now available for adoption.

Spanky has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Spanky is a corgi mix that arrived at the shelter as a stray. He was having trouble using his back legs either due to genetics or an old injury. It turns out he has calcified discs in his back. He may need surgery from a specialist to prevent the discs from rupturing in the future or he may just need pain management and a life with decreased activity. Our vets are currently exploring the options and taking into account quality of life issues and what would be the best path for Spanky. In the mean time he is on minimal activity rest and anti-inflammatory medications in a foster home.

Roxie also has a mild heart murmur that is mostly likely caused by the severe infection. She is currently under AFRP's care and will be available for adoption soon.

Luther has been adopted.

Luther is a precious little Chihuahua mix that was hit by a car and taken to the shelter with severe bruising around his pelvis. AFRP was asked to help Luther. It turns out his pelvis was shattered and broken in several places. At first we were told Luther would need an expensive bone plating surgery, but it turns out he just needs 4-6 weeks of cage rest and his pelvis will heal on it's own. He will be available for adoption in Mid-March.

Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Buttercup came to us from the Monterey County Animal Shelter. She was diagnosed with a heart murmur at the shelter and severe dental disease. We were able to get her to a vet hospital for a dental cleaning and some extractions of rotten teeth. After diagnostic tests, it was determined that she did not need medication for the murmur, but it should be monitored periodically as she ages. She also has a little arthritis in her neck that responds well to anti-inflammatory medications as needed. This poor little girl was used in a puppy mill. She has a tattoo in her ear indicating that she lived most of her life in a "Kennel #17". She is now in a loving foster home and is available for adoption.

Diamond has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Diamond is a very sweet young kitty that arrived at the shelter as a stray on New Years Eve. At the shelter she was very withdrawn and unsocial. AFRP was asked to help her and when we had her examined by a vet we found out that she needed to have all of her teeth removed. They were all rotten which is probably why she wasn't feeling well at all. She was also anemic as a result from the badly infected teeth and she has a mild heart murmur. After Diamond's major dental procedure she will need a few weeks to recover and then she will be available for adoption.

She almost didn't make it, but thankfully she pulled through. She had to have surgery to regain site in her badly affected eye, but is now doing great. This feisty little fighter was named after Mohammed Ali's daughter, Laila, the boxer. She is tough little sweetie. She is currently available for adoption.

Perry is a very friendly little Chihuahua mix that was found as a stray and came to AFRP. He has bowed legs due to two "luxating patellas". He was checked out by a vet and he does not need surgery to correct his legs at this time. He gets around fine and although his legs are curved, they don't seem to cause him any pain. Perry also had a large, painful cyst on his back that was almost fused to his spine. The cyst had to be surgically removed, and Perry is feeling much better now. He is currently available for adoption.
