AFRP fills a niche in the community by rescuing animals from shelters that would otherwise be euthanized. The animals that need our help the most are those that will never make it to the adoption floor due to major or minor medical needs. Read more.

MEDICAL PET OF THE WEEK

Maus's Donors
Karen White

Maus is a sweet older cat who lost her home when her owner passed away. Sadly, Maus had spent too much time as an outdoor cat. Just like people, cats can get skin cancer from excessive sun exposure. When Maus came into our care, she had skin cancer lesions on her ears and nose, where her pink skin had no protection from the sun. She had surgery to remove the damaged sections of her ears and nose, and her prognosis is excellent. She is a super sweet and affectionate kitty who is happy to have a second chance. Once Maus has healed from her surgery, she will be available for adoption to an indoor-only household.

Augie's Donors
Be the first to donate!

Augie is a senior Australian Shepherd who came to us in one of the worst states of neglect that his rescuer has ever seen. He was skin and bones; and covered with fleas, ticks and foxtails. His foster mom spent hours brushing him and picking the foxtails out of his paws and skin. Sadly, some of the foxtails were so deeply imbedded, they caused large abscesses as they worked their way back out. He has been to the vet twice to be sedated and have his wounds debrided. We are hoping to raise $500 to cover the costs of Augie's veterinary expenses. Despite the hardships he has faced, Augie is a super sweet boy and is currently available for adoption.

Jewel is a sweet and beautiful 3-year-old cat with one blue eye and one green eye. She came to us from the San Jose Shelter after coming in with three kittens. Sadly Jewel had skin cancer on her ears from too much sun exposure. The San Jose Shelter generously provided the surgery to removed the damaged parts of her ears. She also needed to have an infected tooth removed. When Jewel has healed she will be available for adoption as a strictly indoor-only cat.

Buddy came to us from the Salinas Shelter on April 20. He had no vision, and upon exam, the vet discovered that Buddy had bilateral ear infections that had been left untreated. The chronic infection and swelling had left him blind. We are not sure if Buddy will ever see again, but his ear infections are being treated and hopefully the swelling will diminish. He is a delightful dog and is ready for a foster home. His medical costs were $380, sponsored by Lifeline 4 Paws.

Conner , a 6-8 month old lab/shepherd mix, came to us from the Salinas Shelter on April 25. He had been hit by a car and could bear no weight on his right rear leg. From his X-rays the vet determined that Conner needed FHO surgery. It's likely that Conner will have hip problems as he ages, and the vet recommends that he always be on good food, supplements, and maintain a low weight and active lifestyle. He's a fantastic dog and looks forward to a happy and healthy life. Conner's surgical expenses were $800, sponsored by Lifeline 4 Paws.

Girl , a sweet 5-year-old Boxer mix, came to us from the Salinas Animal Shelter after she lost her home when her family divorced. Even though she wanted to run and play, Girl was in pain and was limping badly. The vet determined that Girl needed surgery on her anterior cruciate ligament to relieve her pain and allow her to go on to lead a happy and active life with a new family. Lifeline 4 Paws generously donated $800 towards Girl's surgery.

Sweet little Marie, a tiny 4-year-old Chihuahua mix, was attacked by a larger dog. Possibly grabbed and shaken, the force of the attacker's jaws broke Marie's shoulder blade and ripped open her flesh. Despite being in terrible pain, Marie remained quiet and tolerant during her exams, offering little doggie kisses to those who were trying to help her. Marie's shoulder will heal on it's own, but the significant damage to her soft tissue will take some time and TLC to fully heal. Any donation to Marie's medical fund will be greatly appreciated.

Eloise is a sweet 1-year-old longhaired tabby who needed surgery to repair an abdominal hernia. The vet calls Eloise a true miracle kitty who is fortunate to be alive. While she was in surgery, she had an adverse reaction to the anesthetic, and went into cardiac arrest. The vet was able to resuscitate her, but she was blind and unable to eat on her own. After two weeks of special care, Eloise was finally able to move around and eat on her own. She has regained partial sight but it is unknown if she will regain her full vision. This special girl is currently in foster care and will eventually be available for adoption to a very special household. We are hoping to raise $200 to cover the cost of Eloise's hernia surgery.

One of our volunteers was driving from Salinas to Santa Cruz one cold morning last December when she saw a small ball of orange fur near the white line on the side of the road. She circled back and pulled over to find a four-month-old orange tabby kitten, injured and nearly frozen. She wrapped him in her coat and rushed him straight to the nearest vet--Center Animal Hospital in Castroville. Poor little Rudolph was so chilled, his body temperature would not even register on the thermometer. It also appeared that he had probably been hit by a passing car and had a bloody nose, bruised mouth with missing teeth and a large laceration on the inside of his hind leg. Fortunately Rudolph responded well to treatment, and after getting warmed up, receiving fluids and antibiotics, and having his cut stitched up, he is on the road to recovery. Rudolph used up one of his nine cat lives and is very lucky to be alive. Update: Rudolph's leg healed beautifully. We discovered he has a condition called megacolon, meaning his has a section of colon with low motility. This gives him a very cute round-bellied look. Rudolph is doing well eating a grain-free diet, and will need an adopter that can monitor this condition over his lifetime. He is currently available for adoption.

Abandoned and living on her own, Dixie was not only trying to feed herself, she was pregnant and needing to keep her unborn puppies nourished too. She began to hang around a business in Castroville, where the kind owner noticed the frightened stray dog and tried to earn her trust by setting out food for her. On November 9 an AFRP volunteer helped him catch Dixie, and that is when they discovered she was very pregnant. Her four adorable puppies were born in the foster volunteer's home on November 20, and fortunately mom and puppies are healthy and doing well. Thank goodness the puppies were born in a warm home and not out in a cold field. We are hoping to raise $200 for Dixie and $200 per puppy to cover the cost of their spay/neuters, vaccines and microchips. Update: Dixie's puppies have all been adopted, and now Dixie is looking for a home!

When one of our feral cat volunteers was checking on a situation behind some businesses in South County she came across this little girl huddled near a dumpster. Much too sick and weak to run like a normal feral kitten our volunteer took off her fleece AFRP vest and scooped her up. A trip to the vet revealed a number of problems. She had severe upper respiratory and urinary tract infections, both Coccidia and Giardia , and an extreme load of roundworms. The vet believes the parasites and infections have stunted her growth. By her teeth it appears she is already 6 months old, but, only weighed in at 2 1/2 pounds. (That is the normal weight of an 8-9 week old kitten). The good news is she will recover after long term foster care and a host of medicines to cover all her issues. We would like to re-name Dumpster kitty. With your donation you can suggest a new name in the 'notes and comments' field on the donation page. Feral volunteers will vote for the winning name! (Of course the more you donate, the more we will consider you choice in naming her!!) Help us support our TNR (trap/neuter/return) program. More funding means more spays and neuters for the unsocialized community cats out there, and fewer sick kittens suffering needlessly. Update: Now named Lil' Dumplin', this special girl has recovered and was recently spayed. She will be available for adoption shortly!

Bliss will need to have her remaining teeth pulled and will need antibiotic treatment to eliminate her infections. We are hoping to raise $800 to pay for her care. Update: Bliss had her teeth extracted, and has recovered nicley. She's now available for adoption!

Nero is a feral kitty that had gone through a successful TNR (trap/neuter/return) program three years ago and was living in a managed colony. Recently, he was was found broken and banged up on the side of the road. His forearm was broken in two places. He now has a cast that requires bandage changes every 10 days. He should heal up in about 8 weeks. For a feral kitty he is being very cooperative and is grateful for the help! Nero (for narrow escape) will tell you it is not easy living outside and on the streets for ferals. He is the 'Poster Child' for AFRP's TNR program. The more TNR our Feral Volunteers can do, the less kitties we have out there on the streets where terrible and tragic accidents can happen. Our Feral Fund is supported by a handful of volunteers that raise money for spay/neuter by private donations, an annual Garage Sale, and the once a month 'Feral Friday' at the Treasure Shop. Mojo came down with a terrible infection which has caused his right eye to form a film over the surface of his eyeball. Mojo has been to the vet and will need surgery to see if the eye can be saved or if it will need to be removed. They eye surgery will cost $300 and his diagnostic work and a followup visit with the eye specialist to help clear up the infection in his right eye will cost another $190. If you can help this little guy with his care he would be most appreciative. Update: Mojo had his left eye removed and he's doing great. He is now available for adoption!

He had been locked in the home without food and water for several weeks and possibly up to three months. He was emaciated and near death. He was surviving by drinking water from the toilet. The abandoners most likely left a supply of food for him, but once it was gone he went several weeks with only water. Garfield is in foster care fighting to regain his strength and health. Poppy is a very sweet black and tan Dachshund who arrived at the Monterey County Shelter as an injured stray. She had probably been hit by a car. She was microchipped, and the shelter did their best to locate her owner. Sadly, the owner did not come for Poppy and by the time the vet performed surgery to repair her pelvis, it was too late and the bones had already started to fuse incorrectly. When Boots was picked up as a stray in South Monterey County, it was obvious that she had some serious injuries to both front legs. She was immediately taken to Los Coches Vet Hospital for evaluation before being transferred to the Monterey County Shelter. X-rays showed that the radius and ulna of both front legs were fractured in multiple places. The vet suspects this sweet little black and white Terrier/Chihuahua mix was a victim of abuse--her injuries are consistent with being kicked or stepped on repeatedly. Boots' front legs will require surgical repair, with multiple plates in both legs. Her surgery will cost about $2,000. Lifeline for Paws has committed to $1,200, and we are hoping to raise the balance of $800. Update: Boots had her surgery and has made a great recovery. She is currently available for adoption.

Walter , a nine-month-old tabby, was born with some eye deformities. One eye was smaller than normal, and he only had partial eyelids on both eyes. Due to the deformed eyelids, the small amount of vision he had was being compromised by fur rubbing his cornea every time he blinked. Ouch! The vet determined that for Walter's long-term health and well-being, both of his eyes would need to be removed. Walter has now had his enucleation surgery and is doing well. His stitches will be removed in late January, and he will be available for adoption shortly after. He's a happy-go-lucky, playful little guy and he'll live his life to the fullest despite being completely blind. We are hoping to raise $700 to cover his surgical expenses. The vet examined him and said most of his teeth were embedded into his jaw and some were all the way up into his nasal cavity. Shadow is a very special lab with a very special skill. At 10 months, he was adopted from a shelter by a family with a daughter that had cerebral palsy. Every time the little girl was about to have a seizure, Shadow instinctively ran to get the help of an adult. He was not trained to do this--he did it all on his own. Unfortunately, when the little girl passed away, the grieving family gave Shadow away. Sadly, the next family accidently hit Shadow with their car, and he ended up needing his leg amputated. Now Shadow is 3 years old and is looking for his forever home. He is in foster care with AFRP and is receiving treatment for heartworm. He'll need another week of crate rest and then will be available for adoption. We are hoping he will find a home where he can use his special gift for detecting seizures.

Tamina is sweet and gentle senior Oriental Shorthair who came to us from the Salinas Animal Shelter. She could not keep any food down and became severely dehydrated. The vet ran a complete blood panel, and found her illness was due to a generalized infection from some abscessed teeth. She was in so much pain, she could not eat regular food and could only lap up thin gruel. Tamina required several rounds of antibiotics to get the infection under control before undergoing surgery to remove the problem teeth. After a bit more recovery time, Tamina will be ready for adoption. We are hoping to raise $500 to cover the costs of her treatment.

Tobias aka Toby is a sweet little chihuahua mix who was found injured on the outskirts of Salinas and was brought into the County Animal shelter. It was determined that he had a fractured pelvis and would need some bed rest to let the pelvis heal but because of the fracture site he would also need to have a femoral head operation on his hip joint once his pelvis was stabilized. Even with a generous discount from Carmel Holistic Vet Clinic, this procedure still cost $859. Tobias is now feeling much better and is well on his way to a full recovery. He will be available for adoption soon.

Greek is an adorable 1-2 year old brown and white Chihuahua mix who arrived at the Salinas Shelter with an injured rear leg and hip after being hit by a car. He was frightened and in pain, but allowed the staff to handle him and has been sweet and gentle throughout this sad chapter of his life. Greek underwent FHO surgery (femoral head ostectomy) and is recovering nicely in foster care. We are looking for an additional $127 to cover the last of his medical costs. This sweet little guy will soon be available for adoption.

Amelia has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Amelia is a 10 month old mini Aussie with a broken back! She was injured, sad, and in pain when she arrived at the shelter. They thought she had a broken pelvis and asked AFRP to take her. When we got her to our vet for x-rays it turns out she has a broken back or she was born with a missing vertebrae. As you can see from her x-ray it is a major break! The vet couldn't believe she was alive let alone walking. After a consultation with an orthopedic specialist, it has been determined that Amelia was either born this way or was injured when she was very young and her body has adapted. Amelia is a going to need a special home, one that will not allow her to jump off of furniture or in and out of cars, etc.. Surgery could make things worse so Amelia needs to be adopted out as a special needs dog.

Poor loveable Lucy ended up at the shelter after being viciously mauled by another dog. There were extensive bite wounds to her right side and possible damage to one of her eyes. She needed to receive medical care quickly to prevent the wounds from having trouble healing. She required many stitches to close up her side and antibiotics to help her heal. She will be having her eye evaluated by a specialist to see if any more treatment is needed which will cost an additional $150. Sweet little Lucy is currently recovering in a foster home while she continues to heal.

Donnie is a three year old Australian Shepherd that came to us from the Madera Animal Shelter. We thought he was a healthy dog, but at his first vet exam we tested positive for heartworm. We also found out he had an old injury leg and elbow injury that had gone untreated and was causing him some pain. This brave guy is currently undergoing several months of heartworm treatment and will most likely have orthopedic surgery to correct the injuries once he's healthy enough to undergo anesthesia.

Chance is a really nice 5 month old cattle dog/yellow lab puppy that arrived at the shelter with a broken hip and an vet's IV Catheter still taped to his leg. It appears that at some point he had received some medical treatment, but ended up on the streets for about two weeks with the broken hip and catheter still attached. Chance had an fho surgery to repair his hip and is now recuperating.

Remus Lupin and Sirius Black (see above) are two super sweet wiggly 5 month old Dalmatian mix puppies who have had a very rough start to their lives so far. The pair had been abandoned on the streets and came into the Salinas Animal Shelter with inflamed skin and terribly thin coats. The shelter staff thought they may have chemical burns it was so bad. The pups were taken in by AFRP and were seen by the vets. After a battery of tests the pups were diagnosed with a genetic skin disorder in which there is no cure. But their hard luck does not stop there poor Sirius contracted Parvo which kept him hospitalized for a week where he luckily responded well to the treatment. These tests for both pups and his treatment for Parvo cost $1,600. Remus his brother luckily was spared the virus but had to have an eye exam where he has been diagnosed with glaucoma and he will need to have his eye removed in the near future. The estimated cost of Remus' eye surgery is $630.00. These two loving pups have taken all this in stride and prove that nothing can keep good dogs down.

Steph , (aka Stephani) is a 10 month old mini cattle dog with a docked tail weighing in at 22 lbs. She came to us from a small shelter in the Bakersfield area. Her rear leg had been injured and healed incorrectly. Because the injury was left untreated we could not save her leg and she had to have it amputated. Steph has recovered from her surgery and is ready for a home of her own. Because she is still adjusting to a mising limb, she is a bit clumsy, but when she slips or slides she gets right back up and continues chasing her toy. Her medical expenses were $800.
