AFRP fills a niche in the community by rescuing animals from shelters that would otherwise be euthanized. The animals that need our help the most are those that will never make it to the adoption floor due to major or minor medical needs. Read more.

MEDICAL PET OF THE WEEK

Gonzo's Donors
Jen Wegis

Dwayne Ricks

Gonzo is small for his age, but he makes up for it with a big personality! This six month old kitten was found living with a feral colony in Salinas, but was at a disadvantage because he could not see very well. Our volunteer put him in a carrier and took him home to foster. Not a feral cat, Gonzo loves people, cats and dogs. He is an affectionate lap warmer who purrs non-stop! Sadly, he was diagnosed with glaucoma. He is already blind in one eye, and since his intraocular pressure is so high, both eyes will need to be removed. There is no doubt that this bright, friendly and curious boy will do fine as a blind cat and will make someone a very special companion. We are hoping to raise $800 to help pay for his surgical expenses.

Tessie is an eight-month-old Chihuahua mix pup who was found abandoned and living in the pallets behind the Walmart in Salinas. She was having trouble using her hind legs, walking stiffly, dragging her hind paws and knuckling under as if she had suffered an injury. X-rays showed no breaks or issues with the bones, so the vet assumes that Tessie sustained some nerve damage at some point and may always walk with some stiffness in her hind end. She will soon be available for adoption.

Rogue , a three-month-old black kitten, was rescued from the middle of the street after being hit by a car. A concerned citizen stopped traffic, wrapped the kitten in her coat and rushed him to the vet. He was diagnosed with a broken jaw and a broken and lacerated hind leg. He also had a ruptured bladder that required immediate surgical repair. His x-rays are being sent to an orthopedist to see if his leg will need surgical repair. In the meantime, he is being kept comfortable. Rogue has a strong will to live and we want to give this kitty every possible chance at a happy life. We are gratefully accepting donations for his medical care. Update 1/23/12: Sadly, Rogue developed complications from his internal injuries and had to be humanely euthanized today. We'd like to thank Rogue's rescuer, the vets and clinic staff, and everyone who sent donations and kept Rogue in their thoughts and prayers. This sweet boy purred until the end, and knew that he was loved.

Sunny D was found as an abandoned kitten behind a grocery store. Sadly, her left paw was damaged when pallets were being moved - nobody was aware that a tiny kitten was hiding there. Sunny recovered in foster care, but never completely regained the use of her front leg. The nerves in the damaged paw remained sensitive and painful. This week Sunny D underwent surgery to amputate her front leg. She will adjust nicely to being a three-legged cat, and best of all, she won't have any more nagging pain. She'll be available for adoption once she has recovered from her surgery. We are hoping to raise $300 to help with Sunny D's medical expenses.

Cappy is making a miraculous recovery after being struck by a car on Blanco Road in Salinas. The force of the collision threw this young Australian Shepherd into a ditch, where he lay helplessly until Monterey County Animal Control responded to a call and took him to a vet for evaluation. In addition to an injury to his right eye, Cappy suffered a severely fractured spine and was in danger of losing the use of his hind legs. Thankfully, Dr. Greg Marsolais of Pet Specialists of Monterey performed the delicate orthopedic surgery to stabilize Cappy's spine on Monday, October 17, and he has already made some wonderful progress. Though Cappy still has many weeks of physical therapy ahead of him, it looks like he will regain the use of his hind legs. We are grateful to everyone who has rallied to give this dog a second chance. We are hoping to raise $6,000 to cover the costs of his surgery and rehabilitation. Cappy update 12/22/11: Cappy continues his amazing recovery! Cappy has been walking on the underwater treadmill along with receiving acupuncture, laser therapy and neuro-muscular stimulation. We'd like to thank Natural Veterinary Services of Pacific Grove for generously providing discounted sessions and for playing such an important role in Cappy's recovery!

Muffin , a three-year-old Shih Tzu mix, came to AFRP from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as an injured stray. Her damaged right eye will need to be removed; and she is a bit wobbly when she walks, pointing to some possible neurological problems that need further testing. Muffin is a delightful little dog with a very gentle and sweet disposition. We are looking for donations to help pay for the surgery to remove her eye, along with diagnostic x-rays and blood work.

Rourke is a beautiful purebred Boxer who was running loose and hit by a car on Highway 101 in Soledad on August 11. He was picked up by the CHP and taken to a local vet clinic, where he was diagnosed with two broken hind legs. The owner was contacted, but declined to care for the dog. The orthopedic surgeon assures us that Rourke can make a full recovery but will require surgical repair. Our discounted cost is $2,700. Please make a donation on Rourke's behalf so he can receive this lifesaving surgery. Update 8/18/11: Once in surgery, the vet discovered that one of Rourke's hind legs was too damaged to be saved, and had to be amputated. His other fractured leg was pinned and is expected to heal very well. Rourke should adjust well to being a three-legged dog, and will be available for adoption once he has healed.

Taters may look like a candidate for the "World's Ugliest Dog" contest right now, but we're hoping she'll soon be growing a nice thick coat of fur. Diagnosed with a severe generalized yeast infection, Taters has tried medications, special baths, supplements and diets to solve her skin problems, to no avail. She is itchy and miserable! Now she's about to start a very specific skin treatment while in foster care, and we're hoping this will be the answer to her skin issues. We're hoping to raise $300 to help pay for her special food, supplements and Nzymes Skin Program.

Geddine , a nine-pound Pomeranian, came to us from the San Jose Shelter in a state of neglect, suffering from flea allergies, several broken teeth and a severe luxating patella (misaligned kneecap) on her hind leg. Though many dogs can live with mildly luxating patellas, Geddine is going to require orthopedic surgery to correct her problem in order to prevent future pain and arthritis in the joint. We are hoping to raise $1,000 to help with Geddine's medical expenses.

Sascha , a one-year-old German Shepherd/Border Collie mix, had been abandoned in the hills of Watsonville and was emaciated and limping badly when she was rescued. Her x-rays revealed severe hip dysplasia, and she only weighed 34 pounds - a dog her size should be 50 pounds. Several orthopedists recommend that she undergo Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) surgery to correct the problem and ensure that she will have a happy, pain-free life ahead of her. We are hoping to raise $1,500 to give this sweet dog a second chance with a family of her own.

Nero is a feral kitty that had gone through a successful TNR (trap/neuter/return) program three years ago and was living in a managed colony. Recently, he was was found broken and banged up on the side of the road. His forearm was broken in two places. He now has a cast that requires bandage changes every 10 days. He should heal up in about 8 weeks. For a feral kitty he is being very cooperative and is grateful for the help! Nero (for narrow escape) will tell you it is not easy living outside and on the streets for ferals. He is the 'Poster Child' for AFRP's TNR program. The more TNR our Feral Volunteers can do, the less kitties we have out there on the streets where terrible and tragic accidents can happen. Our Feral Fund is supported by a handful of volunteers that raise money for spay/neuter by private donations, an annual Garage Sale, and the once a month 'Feral Friday' at the Treasure Shop. Your donation to Nero will help cover his expenses and will help fund TNR in Monterey County.

Garfield is a sweet kitty that was found by a real estate agent in a home that had been foreclosed. He had been locked in the home without food and water for several weeks and possibly up to three months. He was emaciated and near death. He was surviving by drinking water from the toilet. The abandoners most likely left a supply of food for him, but once it was gone he went several weeks with only water. Garfield is in foster care fighting to regain his strength and health. Update: Garfield is doing well and his foster family loves him! He has come a long way.

Russell , a 13-week-old Shepherd mix puppy, came very close to losing his life. Found on the side of road and taken to the Monterey County Shelter by a concerned citizen, Russell was examined by Dr. Davis, the shelter vet. He had a severely broken hind leg and would either need immediate help or would need to be euthanized. Dr. Marsolais at Pet Specialists of Monterey performed surgery to pin and stabilize Russell's leg on Saturday, and it looks like this lucky pup can look forward to a long and happy life. We will provide updates as Russell continues to heal. We are hoping to raise $1,500 to help cover Russell's medical expenses.

Abandoned and hit by a car near a laundromat, little Annie waited all day for someone to help her. Sadly, most people passing by didn't give the injured little kitten a second thought. Fortunately a kind citizen called Monterey County Animal Control and Annie was taken to the Emergency Vet Clinic. This resilient little feline did suffer a fractured hind leg, but thankfully had no internal injuries. She is expected to make a full recovery and will be available for adoption once she has healed. We are hoping to raise $300 to cover the cost of her medical care.

Odoe is a 4-5 year old Australian Shepherd who was found on the side of the road and taken to a vet hospital in Calaveras County. Hit by a car, Odoe suffered a head and neck injury that damaged the nerves to his right front leg. At first the vet thought Odoe would need surgery or perhaps amputation, but the good news is that Odoe is gradually improving thanks to laser treatments with Becky Lewis RVT and swim therapy with Connie Frank, RVT, who have generously discounted their services for us. We estimate Odoe will need several more months of therapy, and are hoping to raise $1,000 to help with his medical expenses.

Winnie is a 5-month-old pit bull mix puppy who had been living in pain her entire life. The Monterey County Animal Services called us for help with Winnie after she came in as a stray with painfully swollen, irritated left eye due to entropian (an inward rolling eyelid). Anyone who has had a stubborn eyelash rubbing their eye - multiply that by one hundred to imagine how much pain Winnie felt every time she blinked. Thankfully, Winnie underwent surgery to have her eyelid repaired, and she is now pain-free and will have no further problems. We are hoping to raise $500 to cover the costs of Winnie's surgery.

Amelia is a beautiful eight-month-old torbie who came to us from the Salinas Animal Services after arriving with damaged and infected eyes. Currently in foster care, Amelia is proof that you don't need sight to enjoy a rich and enjoyable life. She plays, purrs, snuggles and snoozes just like a sighted cat. Amelia will soon have her stitches removed and will be available to an adopter who can provide her with a safe, loving home. We are hoping to raise $300 to help cover Amelia's medical expenses.

Kris Kristofferson , a handsome ten year old, blue-eyed Lynx Point Siamese came to AFRP from the Salinas Animal Services. He underwent surgery to remove some painfully infected teeth, but as time went on, instead of feeling better, Kris continued to have so much pain that even lapping up a thin gruel made him growl with discomfort when he ate. Kris got a referral to Dr. Judy Force, a veterinary dental specialist. Dr. Force performed surgery to remove the remainder of Kris Kristofferson's teeth, along with eight root fragments that had been left behind previously. Kris's foster mom, Karen, reports that he is now eating like a horse and gaining back some much-needed weight. This sweet boy is the ultimate lap cat and loves nothing more than curling up for some petting and attention. He is on pain medication while his gums continue to heal. We'd like to thank Dr. Suzy H. of Monterey Animal Hospital and Dr. Judy Force for discounting their services for Kris, and also Kris's wonderful foster mom Karen for being his advocate and caregiver. Winkie and his two brothers came to us from the San Jose Shelter. Though his two siblings are perfectly normal, little Winkie was born with a painful eyelid abnormality called eyelid agenesis. He's a sweet little guy who tries hard to hold still for his daily eye meds, even though he's in pain. The eyelid agenesis causes the fur around Winkie's eyes to rub against his corneas and can potentially cause corneal ulcers and more serious eye problems. Winkie has been examined by veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Gratzek, and she recommends cryotherapy to remove the hairs that are causing irritation. Often more than one procedure is necessary to completely destroy the small hairs. We are hoping to raise $500 to cover the cost of Winkie's initial surgery, and $350 for each additional procedure. This sweet little guy deserves to live a happy, pain-free life. Thank you for your donations!

Benny , an 8-week-old Mastiff mix puppy, was found abandoned on the side of the road just outside the Salinas city limits. He barely missed being hit by a car, and was taken to the Monterey County Animal Services by concerned citizens who couldn't bear the thought of this little guy dying alone on the highway. Due to the severity of Benny's skin condition, the shelter would have had to put Benny to sleep after completing his stray time, but thankfully AFRP was able to help. Benny has a severe case of demodex mange, leaving him practically hairless. On top of that he is dealing with a skin infection that has left his skin painful and raw. Benny will be receiving medications, fish oil supplements and weekly medicated baths at VCA Santa Cruz for many weeks as his skin heals. The concerned citizens who originally rescued Benny from the roadside are so grateful to AFRP for taking him into their program, they are now fostering him and intend to continue being AFRP Foster Volunteers for other dogs in the future. We are hoping to raise $600 to help pay for Benny's medications and treatments so that he can heal and have an opportunity to find happiness in a home of his own.

Blossom , a darling five-month-old terrier mix was running loose when hit by a car and dragged, tearing the skin off her rear leg and paw. She is now safe with AFRP and is being cared for at VCA Animal Hospital in Santa Cruz. After undergoing x-rays and bandaging, the vet determined the most humane option for Blossom was to amputate her mangled leg. She is a very sweet, quiet dog and is very cooperative with the vet staff while receiving her treatments. Blossom will be available for adoption once she has healed from her amputation surgery. We are hoping to raise $1,716 to pay for her medical expenses.

Like many cats left outdoors in cold weather, sweet seven-year-old Nutmeg tried her best to find somewhere to stay warm. Unfortunately, Nutmeg chose the worst possible place by climbing up into the engine of a car. The vet believes she was caught in the fan belt with the car's ignition was turned on, and as a result Nutmeg was left with several very large open wounds on her hindquarters. Nutmeg came to us from the San Jose Animal Services and is now being treated at VCA Animal Hospital in Santa Cruz. Despite the pain she is in, she is a gentle and quiet cat who seems to understand we are trying to help her. Nutmeg will need to have the dying skin removed from her wounds and will need ongoing medical care to prevent infection while she is healing. We are hoping to raise $500 to help with Nutmeg's medical expenses.

Sugar , a five-month-old pit bull mix, suffered a horrific burn on her hindquarters and was slated to be euthanized after being picked up by Merced Animal Control. Despite the agony she must have been in, Sugar had nothing but kisses for the veterinary staff helping her. Rather than put her down, the vet was confident that though the wound is severe, it would heal, allowing this exceptionally sweet and trusting dog to find happiness in a loving home. Due to the severity of the wound and the amount of necrotic tissue, Sugar's tail had to be amputated. She is receiving pain medication, antibiotics and special bandages to keep her wound clean and to speed the healing process as the tissue granulates and fills in. We are hoping to raise $1,500 to help cover the costs of Sugar's surgery and medical care.

Orchid is a petite 2-year-old Birman who suffered a painful infection when somebody wrapped a tight orthodontic rubber band around her tail and left it there. Try as she might, Orchid just could not get that rubber band off by herself. When Orchid arrived at the Salinas Shelter, her tail was swollen, infected and encrusted with dried blood. That same night, she gave birth to three kittens, all stillborn. Poor Orchid. The vet decided that amputation of her tail was the most humane option, there was just too much damage for it to be saved. Orchid has had her surgery and once she has healed and had her stitches removed, she'll be available for adoption. We are hoping to raise $400 to help pay for Orchid's medical expenses.

Dovey is a young Pomeranian mix who arrived at the Salinas Shelter in terrible pain. Her former owner had neglected to have her spayed, and she was desperately trying to give birth to a litter of puppies. Unfortunately, one large puppy was completely stuck in the birth canal. We are not sure how long she was in labor, but it was clear she was exhausted and needed an emergency Caesarian Section to save her life and the lives of her puppies. The puppy that was stuck did not survive, but the vet was able to deliver six more puppies surgically. One puppy was too weak to nurse and needed several days of tube feeding, but everyone is doing well now. Dovey and her puppies are currently in foster care. We are hoping to raise $2,500 to pay for the surgical expenses and supplies for this brave little dog and her beautiful puppies.

Girl , a sweet 5-year-old Boxer mix, came to us from the Salinas Animal Shelter after she lost her home when her family divorced. Even though she wanted to run and play, Girl was in pain and was limping badly. Lifeline 4 Paws generously donated $800 towards Girl's surgery.

The Salinas Shelter staff gave us a call about a sweet calico cat that had come in to the shelter with terribly injured front leg. Her entire left foreleg was swollen from the elbow to the paw, with a painful draining abscess. X-rays helped the vet determine that Tippy's leg could not be saved; there was just too much nerve damage for her to ever be able to use her leg again. Tippy underwent surgery to amputate her front leg on October 7, and she is recovering nicely. We are hoping to raise $300 to help cover the cost of her surgery. Tippy is currently in foster care and is available for adoption.

Quincy , a sweet 5-month-old Border Collie pup, was hit by a car and rushed to the Emergency Clinic. Quincy sustained some serious injuries, including a dislocated elbow, a broken tail and some de-gloving injuries. Dr. Marsolais will be performing his surgery on 2/17/11 and will amputate Quincy's tail and will try to repair his elbow. If Quincy's elbow cannot be saved due to nerve damage, he will need to have the leg amputated. Along with his surgery, Quincy will require wet to dry bandage changes for his de-gloving injuries. We are hoping to raise $600 to $1,2000 to help cover Quincy's medical expenses. Update on Quincy 3/28/11: Quincy underwent a series of surgeries and is healing very well. His front elbow was put back into place and did not need to be amputated. His injured tail was amputated, his right hind leg was treated for degloving injuries, and his left hind leg required FHO surgery. Happily, Quincy is steadily gaining strength in his injured limbs and his prognosis is good for a long and happy life. He is currently available for adoption.

Morocco came to AFRP from the Merced Shelter after coming in with a severely broken hind leg. X-rays showed that Morocco's leg was broken in multiple places, and repair would be impossible. The vet could not save Morocco's leg, but did save his life. Just under two years old, this adorable six-pound Pomeranian mix will be recovering from his amputation surgery in a Santa Cruz area foster home and should adjust quite easily to life with three legs. Once Morocco has healed, he'll be available for adoption and can look forward to a lifetime of love.

Honey Boy has now recovered from surgery to remove his eye, but while in foster care it was discovered he has trouble swallowing his food. She will require orthopedic surgery to repair her luxating patella, and once she has healed she will have full use of her leg and will be a wonderful little companion dog for a lucky adopter. We received a call from the San Jose Shelter about a super sweet four-year-old cat that had come in with some major injuries. We'll never know for sure what happened to her, but from the extensive damage we are assuming she had been hit by a car. Her chin had been partially degloved (skin separated from the skull) and she had a wide gash on the top of her head and a lacerated ear. She also suffered a dislocated tail at the spine, which may or may not need to be amputated in the future. Jacquar is a wonderful patient and rolls over so the vet techs can rub her belly. She seems to know that she is in good hands and we know she'll be a wonderful companion cat for a compassionate adopter once she has healed up. Jacquar is currently being cared for at the VCA Animal Hospital in Santa Cruz.

Some of you may have seen Critter's story on KION news, the Monterey County Herald or the Salinas Californian. This sweet and gentle 3-month-old Doberman mix puppy had come in to the Monterey County Animal Services as a cruelty case. Found as a stray wandering near Salinas, someone had taken a pair of kitchen shears and cropped this puppy's ears at home. Traces of adhesive tape were still clinging to Critters muzzle and legs, where he had been strapped down for the procedure. His mutilated ears were badly infected and he was in need of immediate medical attention. Dr. Davis at the County Shelter treated him and even took him home with her so he wouldn't have to sleep alone in a kennel. Now in foster care with AFRP, Critter will be available for adoption once he has healed.

Mojo came down with a terrible infection which has caused his right eye to form a film over the surface of his eyeball. Mojo has been to the vet and will need surgery to see if the eye can be saved or if it will need to be removed. They eye surgery will cost $300 and his diagnostic work and a followup visit with the eye specialist to help clear up the infection in his right eye will cost another $190. The capacity of animals to love and forgive never ceases to amaze us. Mercy, a young female cat, was the victim of the worst imaginable torture at the hands of humans, yet when the vet and vet techs need to handle her for treatment, she purrs and rubs up against them as if to thank them for their care. Mercy came to us from the San Jose Shelter after being doused with a flammable substance and then set on fire. This resilient and brave little kitty has made good progress, but still has a way to go before she has fully healed. She will soon need surgery to remove the damaged tissue on her ears. Mercy is currently in treatment at VCA Animal Hospital in Santa Cruz and will be available for adoption when she has fully recovered from her burns. Update: Mercy has had her surgery and the vet has cleared her for adoption. Please visit our Cats Available web page to fill out an adoption application for this special cat!

One of our volunteers was driving from Salinas to Santa Cruz one cold morning last December when she saw a small ball of orange fur near the white line on the side of the road. She circled back and pulled over to find a four-month-old orange tabby kitten, injured and nearly frozen. She wrapped him in her coat and rushed him straight to the nearest vet--Center Animal Hospital in Castroville. Poor little Rudolph was so chilled, his body temperature would not even register on the thermometer. It also appeared that he had probably been hit by a passing car and had a bloody nose, bruised mouth with missing teeth and a large laceration on the inside of his hind leg. Fortunately Rudolph responded well to treatment, and after getting warmed up, receiving fluids and antibiotics, and having his cut stitched up, he is on the road to recovery. Rudolph used up one of his nine cat lives and is very lucky to be alive. Update: Rudolph's leg healed beautifully. We discovered he has a condition called megacolon, meaning his has a section of colon with low motility. This gives him a very cute round-bellied look. Rudolph is doing well eating a grain-free diet, and will need an adopter that can monitor this condition over his lifetime. He is currently available for adoption.

Dumpster Kitten has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

When one of our feral cat volunteers was checking on a situation behind some businesses in South County she came across this little girl huddled near a dumpster. Much too sick and weak to run like a normal feral kitten our volunteer took off her fleece AFRP vest and scooped her up. A trip to the vet revealed a number of problems. She had severe upper respiratory and urinary tract infections, both Coccidia and Giardia , and an extreme load of roundworms. The vet believes the parasites and infections have stunted her growth. By her teeth it appears she is already 6 months old, but, only weighed in at 2 1/2 pounds. (That is the normal weight of an 8-9 week old kitten). The good news is she will recover after long term foster care and a host of medicines to cover all her issues. We would like to re-name Dumpster kitty. With your donation you can suggest a new name in the 'notes and comments' field on the donation page. Feral volunteers will vote for the winning name! (Of course the more you donate, the more we will consider you choice in naming her!!) Help us support our TNR (trap/neuter/return) program. More funding means more spays and neuters for the unsocialized community cats out there, and fewer sick kittens suffering needlessly. Update: Now named Lil' Dumplin', this special girl has recovered and was recently spayed. She will be available for adoption shortly!

Abandoned and living on her own, Dixie was not only trying to feed herself, she was pregnant and needing to keep her unborn puppies nourished too. She began to hang around a business in Castroville, where the kind owner noticed the frightened stray dog and tried to earn her trust by setting out food for her. On November 9 an AFRP volunteer helped him catch Dixie, and that is when they discovered she was very pregnant. Her four adorable puppies were born in the foster volunteer's home on November 20, and fortunately mom and puppies are healthy and doing well. Thank goodness the puppies were born in a warm home and not out in a cold field. We are hoping to raise $200 for Dixie and $200 per puppy to cover the cost of their spay/neuters, vaccines and microchips. Daisy will be available for adoption once her injuries have healed.

Boots has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

When Boots was picked up as a stray in South Monterey County, it was obvious that she had some serious injuries to both front legs. She was immediately taken to Los Coches Vet Hospital for evaluation before being transferred to the Monterey County Shelter. X-rays showed that the radius and ulna of both front legs were fractured in multiple places. The vet suspects this sweet little black and white Terrier/Chihuahua mix was a victim of abuse--her injuries are consistent with being kicked or stepped on repeatedly. Boots' front legs will require surgical repair, with multiple plates in both legs. Her surgery will cost about $2,000. Lifeline for Paws has committed to $1,200, and we are hoping to raise the balance of $800. Update: Boots had her surgery and has made a great recovery. She is currently available for adoption.

Hailey is a sweet 10-month-old, 8 pound black and white Chihauhua mix who came to us from the Salinas Shelter. She was severely injured from being hit by a car and was in shock. This photo was taken while she was inside the oxygen and heating cage awaiting her medical treatment. X-rays showed that Hailey had a broken tibia, a broken pelvis and a dislocated hip. Lifeline 4 Paws is paying for $1,200 of her surgical expenses, and we are hoping to raise the remaining $593.

Casanova is a 3-year-old tabby who was found as a stray with an injured front leg. Monterey County Shelter staff contacted us to see if we could help with this super-sweet cat. The vet determined Casanova had some permanent nerve damage in his left front leg, and amputation was the only option. He had his surgery and spent some time recovering in foster care. His staples and sutures have been removed, and Casanova is now available for adoption. We are hoping to raise $200 to cover the cost of Casanova's amputation surgery.

Walter has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Walter , a nine-month-old tabby, was born with some eye deformities. One eye was smaller than normal, and he only had partial eyelids on both eyes. Due to the deformed eyelids, the small amount of vision he had was being compromised by fur rubbing his cornea every time he blinked. Ouch! The vet determined that for Walter's long-term health and well-being, both of his eyes would need to be removed. Walter has now had his enucleation surgery and is doing well. His stitches will be removed in late January, and he will be available for adoption shortly after. He's a happy-go-lucky, playful little guy and he'll live his life to the fullest despite being completely blind. We are hoping to raise $700 to cover his surgical expenses. Update: Walter has recovered from his surgery and is adapting well to life as a blind cat. He is currently available for adoption.

Cory has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Cory is just a little guy, but he got himself into big trouble after getting into a fight with another dog. (They were both after the same female dog in heat). To stop the fight, a bystander kicked Cory in the mouth and the result was severe damage to Cory's teeth. He was taken to the Salinas Animal Shelter and was in such pain he needed immediate help. The vet examined him and said most of his teeth were embedded into his jaw and some were all the way up into his nasal cavity. Even though Cory needed most of his teeth extracted, he'll recover and will have an excellent quality of life. He's an 11 pound Spitz mix and will be available for adoption once his mouth has healed.

Tulip is a 4 month old poodle puppy that was most likely hit by a car. She was paralyzed while in the shelter, but is now in a foster home and seems to be getting her movement back. She is definitely using her back paws now. She is wobbly and inconsistent but she is walking! We hope Tulip will make a full recovery. She may need another x-ray and physical therapy to help her along. Update: Tulip is doing great and is now running and playing. She will probably always have some weakness in one hind leg, but will have a wonderful quality of life. She is now available for adoption.

Though they have lost vast amounts of fur and their skin is painfully inflamed, the prognosis is good for these little pups. They are in foster care and receiving good food, daily medication and medicated baths. Their treatment will take some time due to the severity of their condition. They'll be available for adoption once they have recovered.

Lilly has been adopted.

Lilly , a 1-year-old Chihuahua mix, was abandoned in the San Jose area in October. Frightened and lonely, she made the mistake of crossing a busy road and was hit by a car. Lilly's rear femur was broken in two and required surgery to pin it back together. Lilly has been recovering in foster care and is almost ready for a home of her own. She went back to the vet in mid December for another short surgery to have the pins removed, and is now available for adoption. She's a delightful little dog and is very grateful to have a second chance.

Cinnamon is a happy little Corgi mix that ended up at the shelter with a very large tumor on her back leg. She had the tumor removed and biopsied which cost about $400. Sadly, the pathology on the tumor came back as an aggressive form of cancer, and the vet recommended her leg be amputated in order to save her life. If her leg remained, she would only have 4-6 months to live. We need to raise an additional $400 to cover the cost of Cinnamon's amputation surgery.

Shadow has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Shadow is a very special lab with a very special skill. At 10 months, he was adopted from a shelter by a family with a daughter that had cerebral palsy. Every time the little girl was about to have a seizure, Shadow instinctively ran to get the help of an adult. He was not trained to do this--he did it all on his own. Unfortunately, when the little girl passed away, the grieving family gave Shadow away. Sadly, the next family accidently hit Shadow with their car, and he ended up needing his leg amputated. Now Shadow is 3 years old and is looking for his forever home. He is in foster care with AFRP and is receiving treatment for heartworm. He'll need another week of crate rest and then will be available for adoption. We are hoping he will find a home where he can use his special gift for detecting seizures.

Davey has been adopted.

Davey is a super sweet 6-month-old Australian Shepherd who came to us from the Monterey County Shelter. He was in his foster home for less than 24 hours before he started exhibiting the symptoms of canine parvovirus, which can be deadly if not treated swiftly. Fortunately Davey's foster mom was experienced enough to know the signs, and she quickly got him to the vet so that treatment could begin. We are hoping to raise $500 to cover the cost of the veterinary care that saved Davey's life.

Frightened and in terrible pain, Trio was taken to the Monterey County Animal Services as an injured stray. The shelter staff could tell this beautiful little cat deserved a second chance, and called AFRP for help. Only one year old, Trio was a healthy, affectionate cat but her leg was too badly damaged to save. The vet felt amputation was the only option. Fortunately, Trio's positive attitude helped her heal from her surgery, and she's becoming more mobile each day as she adapts to life on three legs. We are hoping to raise $380 to cover the cost of Trio's surgery. She is now available for adoption at the AFRP Adoption Center, 560 Lighthouse Ave in Pacific Grove.

She was started on thyroid treatment ( a simple, inexpensive life long treatment) and antibiotics to clear up her skin infections. All her other blood work looks very good for a senior gal and other than a little arthritis in her hips she a healthy senior dog. Everyone that meets Annabelle is smitten with her. She has an exceptional personality and is so grateful that her itchy scratchy skin is getting taken care of finally!

Sherlock is now in foster care and is ready for his forever home.

Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Tamina is sweet and gentle senior Oriental Shorthair who came to us from the Salinas Animal Shelter. She could not keep any food down and became severely dehydrated. The vet ran a complete blood panel, and found her illness was due to a generalized infection from some abscessed teeth. She was in so much pain, she could not eat regular food and could only lap up thin gruel. Tamina required several rounds of antibiotics to get the infection under control before undergoing surgery to remove the problem teeth. After a bit more recovery time, Tamina will be ready for adoption. We are hoping to raise $500 to cover the costs of her treatment.

Tobias aka Toby is a sweet little chihuahua mix who was found injured on the outskirts of Salinas and was brought into the County Animal shelter. It was determined that he had a fractured pelvis and would need some bed rest to let the pelvis heal but because of the fracture site he would also need to have a femoral head operation on his hip joint once his pelvis was stabilized. Even with a generous discount from Carmel Holistic Vet Clinic, this procedure still cost $859. Tobias is now feeling much better and is well on his way to a full recovery. He will be available for adoption soon.

Amelia has been adopted.
Please consider donating to another animal in need.

Amelia is a 10 month old mini Aussie with a broken back! She was injured, sad, and in pain when she arrived at the shelter. They thought she had a broken pelvis and asked AFRP to take her. When we got her to our vet for x-rays it turns out she has a broken back or she was born with a missing vertebrae. As you can see from her x-ray it is a major break! The vet couldn't believe she was alive let alone walking. After a consultation with an orthopedic specialist, it has been determined that Amelia was either born this way or was injured when she was very young and her body has adapted. Amelia is a going to need a special home, one that will not allow her to jump off of furniture or in and out of cars, etc.. Surgery could make things worse so Amelia needs to be adopted out as a special needs dog.

Remus Lupin and Sirius Black (see above) are two super sweet wiggly 5 month old Dalmatian mix puppies who have had a very rough start to their lives so far. The pair had been abandoned on the streets and came into the Salinas Animal Shelter with inflamed skin and terribly thin coats. The shelter staff thought they may have chemical burns it was so bad. The pups were taken in by AFRP and were seen by the vets. After a battery of tests the pups were diagnosed with a genetic skin disorder in which there is no cure. But their hard luck does not stop there poor Sirius contracted Parvo which kept him hospitalized for a week where he luckily responded well to the treatment. These tests for both pups and his treatment for Parvo cost $1,600. Remus his brother luckily was spared the virus but had to have an eye exam where he has been diagnosed with glaucoma and he will need to have his eye removed in the near future. The estimated cost of Remus' eye surgery is $630.00. These two loving pups have taken all this in stride and prove that nothing can keep good dogs down.
