Looking For a Home

Shasta, a six-year-old sable Australian Shepherd, came to AFRP from the Salinas Shelter in 2010. She is an absolute delight, and is all wiggles and smiles when it’s time for a walk or a ride in the car with her favorite person. Shasta is smart, affectionate and eager to please. She is crate trained, house trained and very well behaved. She loves attention and bonds closely with her caregiver.

So why hasn’t a great dog like Shasta been adopted? Like many herding breed dogs, Shasta is very protective of her home and loyal to her people, but doesn’t like strangers much. She doesn’t like children, and doesn’t like cats. When she’s out for a walk, she doesn’t much like the other dogs she meets, and she prefers the company of women to men. Shasta tends to nip at the feet of people she’d like to herd out of her house . . . not an acceptable behavior in most households!

What kind of adopter would be a good match for Shasta? We’re looking for a person, preferably female, who is experienced with Australian Shepherds and can be a good “pack leader.” Shasta needs plenty of daily exercise for physical and mental stimulation. She needs a child-free, feline-free home with someone who does not have many visitors coming in and out of the house. She would do fine as a single dog, or with other compatible dogs in the home. She’d love being with her person during the day, but would also do fine with a person who works full time – she is reliable in the house when left alone.

Are you the person Shasta has been waiting for? Give us a call at 831-333-0722 or fill out an online adoption application.

Every Life Counts

Fabio is just one of thousands of animals AFRP have rescued since 1998.

AFRP has a lifetime commitment to every animal that comes into our care. We do not put animals down because they have been with us too long or have special medical needs. Fabio is anxious to find a permanent home because although he is off the streets and safe--he'll quickly tell you that being an orphan is not fun. He wants to find a special family to call his own.

AFRP depends on volunteers and donations from the general public to rescue approximately 1,900 dogs and cats each year. Won't you help us save more cats like Fabio?
