Looking For a Home

Onyx, a very sensitive 9-year-old longhaired black cat, responded to the stress of a new baby in the family by overgrooming and eliminating outside her litter box. Her owners and her vet tried everything, including kitty prozac, to no avail. Finally Onyx's owners decided the best thing for Onyx would be to try to find her a home with a less stressful environment.

In the past, it was thought that humans were the only animals that felt emotions. But recent research in the area of ethics and animals suggests that many animals lead rich emotional lives. When Onyx was given up by her former family and came into our care, she was extremely depressed. She didn't want to eat or drink. She spent her day hiding in her little cubby in her foster home, facing the wall. She didn't respond to being touched or petted. She had completely shut down. Onyx was not behaving like the affectionate, friendly cat her former family described to us.

After weeks passed with no improvement, we asked for the help of animal communicator, Teresa Wagner. Teresa explained that Onyx felt extremely sad about being given up by the family she loved. Onyx felt that she was being punished, and that nobody would ever want her. She was grieving the loss of her former life. That's when we made a promise to Onyx; that we would work as hard as we could to find her a new home.

Now for the good news! Onyx finally responded to the gentle caresses from her caregivers, and it was as through an emotional dam had burst. She suddently craved affection and would follow her foster mom around to ask for more love. She was finally ready to go to the adoption center and meet potential adopters. Onyx is now using her litter box every time, and the fur on her hind legs and tail are growing back now that her overgrooming habit has finally stopped.

All Onyx needs now is the special person who can prove to her that she is still worthy of love. Onyx would do best in a calm and quiet home, either as a single pet or with other friendly cats that would not bully her. We made a pledge to Onyx that she would find a loving home, can you help us keep that promise?

Meet Onyx at the Posh Pets adoption site, 160 Fountain Ave in Pacific Grove or call 831-333-0722 for more information about her.

Every Life Counts

Onyx is just one of thousands of animals AFRP have rescued since 1998.

AFRP has a lifetime commitment to every animal that comes into our care. We do not put animals down because they have been with us too long or have special medical needs. Onyx isanxious to find a permanent home because although she is off the streets and safe--she'll quickly tell you that being an orphan is not fun. She wants to find a special family to call her own.

AFRP depends on volunteers and donations from the general public to rescue approximately 1,900 dogs and cats each year. Won't you help us save more cats like Onyx?
