Looking For a Home

Gracie is a four-pound, two-year-old Chihuahua with some serious attitude! Like many Chihuahuas, Gracie can be very, very sweet and can also be very, very challenging. She’s looking for an adopter that loves all the little foibles that make Chihuahuas such unique and delightful little companions.

Gracie loves sitting on laps, taking treats from your fingers and being a part of whatever you are doing. She loves snuggling under blankets and is very loyal and loving to the people she knows and trusts. She plays well with other small dogs once she gets to know them. When Gracie is in her element, there is not a more wonderful little dog.

However, Gracie’s demeanor can change when she’s in unfamiliar territory. We think she was probably not properly socialized when she was growing up, and therefore Gracie’s human caretaker needs to be extremely attentive when handling her in social situations. Gracie does not like to be approached by strangers, and when an unfamiliar person reaches out to pet her, she growls and air-snaps. She has not bitten anyone yet, and we want to make sure it stays that way. (She is not a good adoption candidate for a family with children.)

When out for a walk, tiny little Gracie will bark ferociously at other animals, whether it is a small cat, a bird or an 80-pound dog. This means she might never be a dog that can go to dog parks or romp at the beach - she could get herself into too much trouble! She is crate trained and house trained, though does not particularly enjoy going outside to potty when the weather is cold and wet. Gracie’s ideal adopter would be someone who can enjoy her good qualities, handle her reactive behaviors, and work with her to overcome some of her issues.

Gracie came to us in the worst of circumstances, after arriving at the shelter exhausted from a long labor and a dead puppy lodged in her birth canal. An emergency C-section saved her life, and her courage and tenacity helped her recover from the trauma. All Gracie needs now is that special Chihuahua-loving person that will give her the safe and loving home she deserves. Every Life Counts

Gracie is just one of thousands of animals AFRP have rescued since 1998.

AFRP has a lifetime commitment to every animal that comes into our care. We do not put animals down because they have been with us too long or have special medical needs. Tulip is anxious to find a permanent home because although she is off the streets and safe--she'll quickly tell you that being an orphan is not fun. She wants to find a special family to call her own.

AFRP depends on volunteers and donations from the general public to rescue approximately 1,900 dogs and cats each year. Won't you help us save more dogs like Gracie?
