Looking For a Home

Firefly is a sweet and friendly 2-year-old Maine Coon mix (yes, Maine Coons come in black) who would love to meet you. She's a big girl and weighs in at 24 pounds! Firefly is a friendly yet not demanding cat who is happy for your attention, but also enjoys finding a high perch where she can quietly observe everything going on around her. Not particularly fond of other cats, Firefly would enjoy being in a single cat household. Give her a warm lap, a sunny windowsill and some kitty toys for pouncing, and she'll be one contented kitty!

Sadly, black cats like Firefly are often the last cats to be adopted from shelters simply because of their coat color. Firefly has been with us for nearly a year! Theories abound about why this is so, ranging from age-old superstitions about "bad luck" to the tendency of black cats to fade into the background of their cages and not get noticed by people passing by.

But now there is some good news for black cats. Recent studies show that black cats might actually be healthier and friendlier than the general cat population. Animal behaviorist Temple Grandin notes in her recent book, Animals Make Us Human, that black cats tend to have calmer and friendlier personalities than other cats, and are more social overall -- whether living with humans or with other cats. Stephen J. O'Brien, with the feline genome project, believes the mutation that causes black fur also makes black cats more resistant to some viruses. The melanin in their skin also protects them from skin cancer due to excessive sun exposure.

Healthy, friendly, sociable and beautiful -- why not consider adding a black cat to your household? Through the month of February, AFRP is offering half-price adoption fees for Firefly and all the other black cats waiting for their forever homes. Meet Firefly at the Posh Pets adoption site, 160 Fountain Ave in Pacific Grove, or stop by an AFRP adoption location to meet our other wonderful black cats looking for love.

Every Life Counts

Firefly is just one of thousands of animals AFRP have rescued since 1998.

AFRP has a lifetime commitment to every animal that comes into our care. We do not put animals down because they have been with us too long or have special medical needs. Firefly is anxious to find a permanent home because although she is off the streets and safe--she'll quickly tell you that being an orphan is not fun. She wants to find a special family to call her own.

AFRP depends on volunteers and donations from the general public to rescue approximately 1,900 dogs and cats each year. Won't you help us save more cats like Firefly?
