The Denham Springs, Louisiana Animal Shelter (a no-kill organization) was devastated by Hurricane Gustav, which slammed into the Gulf Coast in early September. The shelter was partially destroyed by the storm, and safe places needed to be found for the dogs and cats. Arrangements were made for the cats, but 120 dogs needed safe places to go. The Denham Springs shelter put out a nationwide call for help, and fortunately several no-kill organizations, including AFRP, offered to provide space for these dogs in need. Twenty dogs were happy to arrive safely at VCA Animal Hospital in Santa Cruz on Saturday, September 27 after their cross-country trek. Local vet clinics have pulled together to help provide temporary housing for these grateful dogs. Many thanks to VCA Veterinary Hospital, Westside Veterinary Hospital, Ark Animal Hospital, East Lake Animal Clinic, Scotts Valley Vet Clinic, Lawrence Pet Hospital, Boulder Creek Veterinary Clinic, Summit Veterinary Hospital and Animal Spa of Soquel. Many thanks to the San Francisco SPCA for temporarily housing 10 of the dogs. |

AFRP is looking for adoptive families and temporary foster homes for these displaced dogs. Most are black lab mixes. They are very sweet and have wonderful temperaments. Romeo, Tara, Indigo, Astro, Tate and Princess tested positive for heartworm and will need to have limited activity while they are undergoing treatment. If you would like to give a dog in need a second chance by fostering or adopting, please call AFRP at 831-333-0722. Click here to read more about each dog. |
