AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested

AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have 5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.

In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you.

Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly.

AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Betty
sponsor me

Betty is an adorable 2-year-old, 12-pound terrier mix with one ear that stands up, and one that flops down. She came to us as a pregnant stray from the Monterey County Shelter in December, and gave birth to one plump, healthy puppy just before Christmas. Now that her puppy is weaned and heading off to a home of her own, Betty is ready for adoption. Though she is very shy with new people and new situations, Betty is a different dog when she feels safe and comfortable. In her foster home she lets down her guard and is a loving, playful and happy little companion. She's looking for a patient adopter that can help her continue to gain confidence. Click here for an online application.

Lady
sponsor me

Lady is a happy and playful 3-year-old, 73-pound Rottweiler hoping to wiggle her way into your heart and home! Lady gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and knows how to sit for a treat. She is house trained and loves to go for walks. She's a smart and responsive dog who is eager to learn more. Lady loves kids but due to her large size and wiggly energy level, adult home or family with kids over age 10 would be best. Lady lost her home when her beloved guardian passed away. Can you give her the second chance she's hoping for? For more about meeting or adopting Lady, please fill out an online application.

Lacey
sponsor me

Looking for a medium-sized companion? Lacey is a 2-year-old, 27-pound Terrier/Schnauzer mix who is not too small, and not too big - just right! She came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as a matted, neglected, shy stray. Since then, she has been beautifully groomed (thank you Michelle S.) and has made great strides in gaining confidence. Lacey loves to go for walks, and trots beside you like a lady on the leash. She is fearful of some men and not others, and reacts to some dogs and not others. She's a work in progress and needs an experienced adult adopter that can continue to work with her. Click here for an online application.

Loni
sponsor me

With big brown eyes and soft, snow-white fur, Loni is a movie-star gorgeous 3-year-old, 16-pound Spaniel/Poodle mix looking for a loving home. She came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as a stray with a seizure disorder. Currently in foster care, Loni is on daily medication and is doing great. She walks like a lady on a loose leash, and sleeps all night on her soft doggie bed. Loni gets along nicely with other dogs, though isn't really interested in playing with them. She's a bit fearful of some men but is working through that issue. Loni will most likely need to stay on her inexpensive seizure medication for her lifetime. Click here for an online adoption application.

Jet is looking for an adopter that can give her lots of love and can continue her training. Puppy obedience class registration required for adoption. Click here for an online application.

Jeeves
sponsor me

Does a dog mind having only three legs? Just ask Jeeves! He's an adorable 3-year-old, 15-pound terrier mix who does not let his tripod status slow him down one bit. He has completely recovered from his amputation surgery and is ready to wiggle his way onto a lap of his very own. Jeeves loves people but can be picky about his dog and cat friends. He'll probably be happiest as a single pet in the household, but you never know . . . his best friend at the AFRP vet clinic is Fergie the German Shepherd! For more information about meeting or adopting Jeeves, please fill out an online adoption application.

Casey
Posted 1-28-16. Casey is a sweet, mellow 10-year-old spayed female Spitz mix who loves to cuddle on the couch and hang out around the house. She is very easy to walk on leash, knows all her commands, and loves to shake hands. She is loyal and loving. She loves to go on car rides, short hikes, and just be around people. She is in excellent health. She would thrive in a home where she can live out her golden years in a quiet, peaceful environment, where she does not have to worry about too much energy around her. Casey and the other dog in her home are no longer getting along. A trainer was consulted, and feels that Casey would do better with a calmer dog as her buddy. Sadly, re-homing her is the best solution at this point in time. Can you help this sweetie with a calm, loving home? If you'd like to meet her, please call Jenna at (510)910-6392.

She is perfectly fine to be alone (indoors or outdoors) during the day but she becomes anxious and frightened if left alone during the night due to a traumatizing July 4th firework incident years ago. She is in good health and all of her shots are up to date and she was just checked at a vet within the last month. Our family raised Lucky from a puppy and we are heartbroken to be placed in this difficult position; we hope that we will be able to find a home for her where she will feel safe and comfortable. Milk Dud
Posted 7/22/15. Milk Dud is a 10-year-old Lab/Shepherd mix. She's shy at first, but once she's known you for a day or two she warms right up. That's when her beautiful personality shines through. Milk Dud is playful and loving, always ready to curl up next to you or follow you from room to room to keep you company. She'd be a great fit for a retired couple or older person living alone who's looking for a kind companion. She loves to go on leisurely walks and is great on a leash. She previously lived with another dog, but she'd probably be happiest as the only pooch in the house. Milk Dud is not an AFRP dog. Jex
Posted 7/16/15. Jex is a 10-year-old, 92-pound Ridgeback/Doberman mix. He's a big boy with a big heart who gets along well with everyone-adults, children, other dogs, and cats. Jex is still pretty active for an older gentleman, though his bad back does slow him down a bit. He has a hard time with stairs and dogs who play rough. He's house-trained, crate-trained, and knows his basic commands. He's basically a big sweetheart of a boy who's looking for a nice place to spend his twilight years. He still has a lot of love to give. Jex's family situation recently changed and they can no longer take care of him. Jex is not an AFRP dog. He knows basic commands and is house-trained, so he'd be an easy addition to your home. A man of leisure, Monty enjoys spending most of his time relaxing indoors. Tigger
Tigger is a 3-year-old neutered male Chow mix, brindle in color. He weighs about 40 pounds and is very strong, and playful. Tigger loves attention and will lean against your leg in hopes of getting more petting! He enjoys going for daily walks, but doesn't care for other dogs while he is on a leash. Tigger would do best in a home where he won't be left alone for long periods of time, as he can dig and chew when bored. He needs an experienced handler with good leadership skills who wants to put in the time. He is protective of his home and people. We would love to see Tigger go to a home where he could receive the proper attention and training that he deserves. We have a young family and have not been able to devote the time he requires. He is house broken and knows basic commands; needs to work on recall when outdoors. Tigger is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in Del Rey Oaks. Gigi
Post renewed 10-30-15. Gigi is sweet petite three-year old Chihuahua found as a stay and brought to the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. She has been in a loving CAPE foster home for about a year with four other dogs, big and small. She has relaxed into her foster home and has gained a lot of confidence. In her home environment she is happy, silly and fun. When she feels safe she is very affectionate, loving lap-time and giving sweet kisses. She loves her squeaky toys and chews. Gigi rides well in the car. She enjoys walks in a low stimulating environment and does nicely on leash. Gigi knows basic commands of sit, wait, and high five. Click here for Gigi's video! She is 90% housetrained but will use a puppy pad if her people forget to ask her to go out. The ideal home for Gigi is a calm stable environment without a lot of new people coming and going. Kids are not recommended. She would do well with the company of another dog that was calm and confident. Her new family would need to be to be committed to supporting her through her fears. By doing this they would be a part of the magic of helping a very special dog heal and share her silly happiness. Gigi is not an AFRP dog and is in the care of CAPE of Santa Cruz.
