AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested

AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have 5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.

In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you.

Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly.

AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Brownie
sponsor me

Brownie is a sweet little princess who is looking for a vacant lap or two. She adores humans who are kind and gentle with her and she will dance on her hind legs to ask for your attention; she also bestows quick little kisses once she knows you a bit. Rescued from the shelter in a state of neglect, Brownie has recovered from flea allergy dermatitis and her coat is now thick and shiny. She will need to be kept on flea preventative and also an inexpensive medication for her thyroid. House trained and crate trained, Brownie will be a lovely addition to a quiet, Chihuahua-loving home. Brownie can live with other dogs and cats too, but she really wants to be the center of attention and could be very happy as a spoiled "only child." Her age is estimated to be somewhere around 6-8 years. For more information about meeting or adopting Brownie, please fill out an online application.

It has taken years of trial and error, but Taters has finally found relief thanks to a combination of special diet and medications. She is now a happy little character who enjoys meeting new people and running errands with her foster mom. Taters is house trained and crate trained, and gets along nicely with respectful cats. She's looking for a special adopter who can keep her on her strict diet and medication regimen to ensure her health and happiness. Read more about Taters. The perfect home for these pups is an active adopter that has prior experience with herding breeds, and willing to go through all things puppy, including chewing, barking, digging, potty training and especially training! This is a very smart and loyal breed. Puppies cannot be left alone for more than 4 hours and proof of enrollment in puppy classes is required before adoption. Monica
Monica may be tiny, but she has an enormous amount of love to share! She's a sweet and playful 4-month-old Chihuahua mix puppy who came to us from the Monterey County Shelter after being picked up as a stray in South Monterey County. Monica weighs about 4 pounds now, and will be well under 10 pounds as an adult. She gets along nicely with other small dogs, and loves to snuggle on laps and burrow under blankets. She's looking for an adopter who can give her the training and gentle guidance every puppy requires. Due to her fragile size, adult adopter preferred. Puppy obedience class registration required for adoption. For more info about meeting or adopting Monica, please fill out an online application.
Nana
sponsor me

Found as an emaciated stray on the side of Carmel Valley road, Nana was saved by a kind citizen who stopped to make sure she did not get hit by a car. She spent her stray time at the Monterey County Shelter, but was never claimed by an owner. It appears Nana may have had a hard life, possibly used to produce litters of puppies. She is a very sweet and submissive girl who is starting to gain some much-needed weight and confidence. She weighs about 38 pounds and needs to gain 10-15 to reach a healthy weight. When you look into Nana's brown eyes, you see a dog that would be grateful to form a loving bond with a human of her own. For more info about meeting or adopting Nana, please fill out an online application.

Summer
sponsor me

Summer is a darling 8-month-old, 26-pound Boxer mix pup who came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as an injured stray. We treated her broken hind leg, and she has healed beautifully. She will be available for adoption once her training session is complete, but in the meantime she is available for meet and greets. For more info about meeting or adopting Summer, please fill out an online adoption application.

Vinny
What a smile! Vinny is a handsome 6-month-old blue and white pit bull pup who came to us after being found as a stray near a vineyard in South Monterey County. Initially a bit shy and scared, Vinny has blossomed after a few weeks in foster care. He is doing well with house training and is happy to sleep in his crate all night. Vinny loves other dogs and has sniffed noses with the cat in his foster home. He's a bit rambunctious and mouthy for young kids, but would be a fabulous dog for a family with kids over age 10. He's an ultra sweet pup and is not possessive of his toys or food. He loves to play and roll in the grass! Puppy obedience class registration required for adoption. For more info about meeting or adopting Vinny, please fill out an online application.
Missy
Meet Missy! She's a gorgeous 2-year-old, 41-pound Border Collie/Aussie mix who came to us from the Monterey County Shelter after being picked up as a stray on River Road. Currently in foster care, Missy is learning new things every day. It appears she did not have any formal training in her previous home, and she's basically a blank slate - very smart and eager to learn! Missy has learned not to chase cats and is good with other dogs. She is working on leash-walking, house training and crate training skills. She is a very active and energetic dog who will need an adopter experienced with the needs of herding breeds. The person who can put some time and training into this nice dog will be rewarded with a wonderful companion. For more info about meeting or adopting Missy, please fill out an online application.
Olaf
sponsor me

What a transformation! Olaf is a 5-year-old, 15-pound sweetheart of a dog with a lot of personality. He has silky, white, non-shedding hair and might be a mix of Poodle, Lhasa Apso, and maybe West Highland White Terrier or Maltese. He was found in rural North Monterey County running down the road in the middle of the night, frightened, thin, horribly matted, and covered in fleas. After a bath, good food, a warm bed, vet care, grooming and lots of love from his foster family, he is a new dog! Olaf is good with other dogs, big and small, and gets along well with grade-school age children. His experience with cats is unknown. He happily sleeps in his crate, walks well on a leash, is curious and confident in most situations, and loves to sit on laps and be cuddled. He can take a few minutes to warm up to strangers but he has bonded easily with his foster family. He still needs work on house training and reliably coming when called, but he is smart and wants to please. Olaf just needs a little time and patience to become the beloved family member he deserves to be. For more information about meeting or adopting Olaf, please fill out an online application.

Rio
sponsor me

Rio is a special 1-year-old, 7-pound Chihuahua mix who came to us from the Tehama County Animal Shelter in Red Bluff, to give him a bit more time to find his adopter. Born with malformed elbow joints in his front legs, Rio stands and walks with his front legs in a permanently flexed position. (Click thumbnail to see his posture.) Despite his challenges, Rio is a happy, tail waggin', friendly little guy who does not feel sorry for himself in the least. He'll never run marathons, but he can take short walks around the block and loves to romp in a grassy backyard. He'll make a wonderful companion for anyone with a soft spot for a dog who is perfect in his own special way. For more information about meeting or adopting Rio, please fill out an online application.

Wookie
(Adoption Pending)

Wookie is an adorable 9-month-old, 13-pound Shi Tzu mix with a charming personality. He walks nicely on the leash and takes treats gently from your fingers. He's a friendly guy who gets along fine with other dogs and cats. Adult household or family with kids over age 12 preferred. This is a breed that requires regular grooming! For more information about meeting or adopting Wookie, please fill out an online application.
Chamba
sponsor me

Chamba's foster mom says he's the sweetest dog in the world! He's a 1-year-old, 14-pound Dachshund/MinPin mix with a beautiful red coat. He came to us from the Monterey County Shelter after coming in as an injured stray that had been hit by a car. Chamba suffered a broken pelvis and spent many weeks in crate rest while his bones mended. Now he's doing great and walks without a limp! Chamba loves playing with other dogs and likes cats. He is house trained and sleeps happily in his crate at night. He's a fun and puppy-like little guy who is the perfect match for an adopter that can continue his training. Great family dog for kids over age 7. For more info about meeting or adopting Chamba, please fill out an online application.

Princess
Hello my name is Princess and I’m a pawsitively sweet and affectionate Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix that would love to go home with you! I am 9 years old, a slim 38 lbs, current on my vaccinations, flea meds, and spayed. Don’t let my age fool you. I’m very energetic and would make an ideal hiking or moderate running buddy. Not only do I enjoy a bit of exercise, but I love car rides too. I’m great with kids and used to live with children that were 15 mo and 11yrs old. Although I’ve lived with other pets, ideally I’d like to try being an only dog. I listen well and know my basic commands, but I could probably use a refresher as I get very excited. I’m housebroken and usually stay inside. I don’t really like crates, but I love a comfy couch. My previous owners moved to where they could not take me. Princess is located in Fremont and is not an AFRP dog. Please contact Genelle at 719-310-9304 or genelle_chapman_98@yahoo.com

Once he knows them, he’ll follow them around like he’s their best friend. He is an amazing dog and a great companion. He’s very active outdoors, but very calm indoors. He loves to snuggle and just hang out, but is perfectly fine on his own too. Tank will be best matched with an active owner who takes him on walks every day. Please contact Najat at 505-803-4515 in Monterey, CA, or najatmm@gmail.com for further information.

She doesn't do well with high energy puppies, young kids, or strangers who make sudden moves towards her. She does not enjoy going to the groomer. Kelsey has never bitten a person or another dog. Penny
My name is Penny I'm a 3-year-old pit bull. As you can tell from my picture, I like to think that I'm human. I sit like a human and even try to talk like one. I am house broken and know some cool tricks! I know how to sit, roll over, lay-down, shake your hand, stay, jump, stare at my treat until you give me the "ok" to eat it and I will gently take the food from your mouth if you allow me to. I weigh 45 pounds and most of it is lean muscle. I love to lay in the sun and bark at random things that fly by. I will love you forever if you spray a water hose at me so that I can chomp away at the water. I am spayed and enjoy a good play buddy. Please take me home so that I can love you too :) Penny is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in Los Banos. For more information please call 408-768-1171 or email Ilinka at Ilinka4@hotmail.com

Carter
Carter is a 7-year-old, 75-pound blind pit bull looking for a home as special as he is. Adopted from a shelter, he was recently returned when his family decided having a blind dog was too much work. Carter adores people but is especially fond of women. His great goal in life is convincing you to rub his belly! Carter will wag his tail and say hi to anyone who approaches. Barking is something he directs at squirrels - he knows when they're around! Carter would like a person who does not get flustered when he runs into things. Carter is house trained and knows sit, although his preferred body position is curled up in his bed. Unable to see important visual cues and unable to give them, Carter sometimes flubs social interactions with other dogs which can lead to scuffles. If you have a laid-back, older dog who can tolerate a large dog bumping into him or her, Carter might appreciate the companionship. But really, Carter just really loves people. Carter is not an AFRP dog. For more info please email e-mail: dogward4 him@yahoo.com or visit www.capeanimals.org
Grasshopper
Grasshopper is a 7-year-old, 5 pound Chihuahua. He is the sweetest little guy, but he does stress out a bit in public. At home however, he is not shy and is very quick to make friends with anyone who many be sitting nearby. He will also go play by himself, and toss a toy around, or go lay down. He is very quiet and fits in easily with other dogs, and we expect, cats too. He does have a slightly hunched back, and although xrays cannot determine anything clinical, we suspect there is some mild neurological stuff going on, as his back legs are a little weak and he can be somewhat wobbly, or tip over. He doesn't do well on too many stairs. Grasshopper is deserving of a wonderful home. He is in the care of Motley Zoo rescue in Washington. He has transportation to the Monterey area if he finds a forever home in this area. Grasshopper is not an AFRP dog. for more info email: info@motleyzoo.org or call 206-453-8480.

Major likes to play with other dogs, but he's big and plays rough. He can also be dominant and will require a breed savvy owner. We do not recommend a home with any small animals, including cats and small dogs. Major is a great dog and with some work he'll be an awesome family member. An adoption application can be found on our website, www.eoerescue.org. The adoption fee for Major is $250 and if you complete an obedience class within 3 months of adoption you will receive a $50 refund. The adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, current vaccinations and deworming. Please call 209-679-7196 for further information.
