AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested |
||
|
AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are
interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first
before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have
5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.
In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you. Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly. AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Beau sponsor me Beau is completely blind, but that doesn't stop him from being a wonderful companion. Originally adopted from AFRP in 2008, Beau returned to us when his guardian had to go into a skilled living facility. This 11-year-old, 85-pound Yellow Lab/Chow mix is a gentle, friendly and sweet boy who is a bit sad about the recent changes in his life. Blind dogs thrive on routine, and Beau's life has been turned upside-down. Beau is a mellow indoor dog and is excellent at laying by feet, rolling over for belly rubs and snoozing on dog beds. He also enjoys going for walks and is good on the leash. He is house trained and good with other dogs. He'd do best in a home with no cats - even though he can't see them, his nose tells him where they are! For more information about Beau, please fill out an online application. |
Scrappy sponsor me Scrappy is only three months old, yet he's already faced many challenges in his life. This 3-pound Yorkshire Terrier mix came to us from the shelter after coming in as an injured stray. He was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis and nerve damage to his tail, which needed to be amputated. We're not sure if this little guy was hit by a car or stepped on, but the damage he suffered has caused him to have some fecal and urinary incontinence. We're hoping that as he heals and matures this will resolve, but in the meantime a certain amount of housekeeping goes along with caring for Scrappy. A doggie belly band is helpful. Scrappy is a bit timid, but plays nicely with other small dogs and will continue to blossom in a safe, loving adult household. Are you the special person Scrappy needs in his life? Click here to fill out an online adoption application. |
Charlie sponsor me With a waggy tail and big sloppy kisses for everyone he meets, Charlie is a handsome 1-year-old, 65-pound Pit Bull mix looking for a home of his very own. Currently in foster care, Charlie came to AFRP from the King City shelter after coming in as a stray. Charlie enjoys playing with other large dogs, and respects dog-savvy cats (though will chase cats that run). He loves people and will stay by your side all day, helping you with chores and resting by your feet when you sit down. He's a big strong goofy dog and is working on leash-walking and is house trained. Great match for an active family with kids over age 8 due his size and energy level. Read more and watch Charlie's video. For information about adopting Charlie, please fill out an online adoption application. Sponsored By: Pemcon in memory of "Riley" |

Dahlia sponsor me Dahlia (aka Dottie) is a perky and sweet 1-year-old Terrier/Chihuahua mix and weighs about 10 pounds. She gets along great with other dogs and trots on the leash like a proud princess when you take her for a walk. Dahlia originally came to us from the Monterey County Shelter last spring, and recently came back to us when her owner could no longer keep her. Dahlia is house trained and crate trained. She is very active and loves playing with toys and chasing squirrel intruders out of her yard! She loves all people and enjoys curling up on your lap for some snuggle time. She's a great match for a family with older kids or an active couple looking for an enthusiastic companion. For more information please fill out an online application. Sponsored By: Teri in honor of Lucy, our 3-legged AFRP Australian Shepherd who passed away this year; Sammye Schnell, Columbus Ohio |
Bizzy sponsor me Bizzy is a happy, wiggly 1-year-old, 5-pound Chihuahua mix who has the sunniest of dispositions despite enduring a couple of challenging months. Abandoned with an fractured front leg in the night drop box at the Monterey County Animal Services in January, Bizzy was transferred to AFRP for medical care. Bizzy's leg has healed beautifully and he loves wrestling with his foster friend Jewel (also on web) and playing fetch. Bizzy is crate trained and knows his basic obedience commands. This friendly little guy would be a great match for a multi-dog household or family with gentle older kids or teens. For more information about Bizzy, please fill out an online application. Sponsored By: Simona Prochazka and her furry babies |
Cara sponsor me Cara is a quiet, friendly and affectionate little pooch who is happiest when she's with you - either held in your arms or snuggled on your lap! She's a long-legged 1-year-old chocolate and white Chihuahua mix who came to AFRP via the Salinas Animal Services after coming in as an injured stray. X-rays showed an old untreated injury that caused her left hind leg to have limited range of motion. She cannot fully extend it, causing that leg to be shorter than the right. Cara may not be a candidate for running marathons, but she'd love to volunteer to be your next lap dog! She is not in any pain and gets around just fine. If you are interested in adopting Cara, please fill out an online application. Sponsored By: Laurie Lerner |

Oona sponsor me Oona is an adorable and affectionate 6-month old boxer mix with long legs, an all-over scattering of black and tan freckles, and a comical single eyebrow. Too frightened in the shelter to be put up for adoption, she has blossomed in foster care into a bouncy, playful pup. Oona requires gentle introduction to new experiences and ongoing positive reinforcement training. She has the sweetest disposition imaginable and thrives on companionship and praise. She would love a family with lots of time to keep her mentally and physically stimulated, a well-matched dog to mentor her, and of course a ton of love to share. For more information about adopting Oona, please fill out an online adoption application. |
Coco Coco (also known as Coco Chanel) is an elegant one-year-old, 50-pound red and white Pit Bull mix who came to us from the Monterey County Animal Services after being picked up as an injured stray. Her left hind leg has completely healed and she walks and runs without a trace of a limp. Currently in foster care, Coco does great with other dogs, and enjoys going for long walks and hikes. Her favorite toy is her blue Kong . . . and whatever toy the other dog is playing with - the grass is always greener! This sweet and gentle dog is a big love, and is looking for a bully-savvy adopter who can continue her education and give her a lifetime of love. For more about Coco, please fill out an online application. |
Stetson sponsor me Stetson is a handsome 1-year-old, 35-pound blue merle Australian Cattle dog who came to AFRP from the Kings County Animal Services after coming in as a shy stray. Currently in foster care, Stetson enjoys the company of other dogs and is crate trained and house trained. He can be nervous in new situations and needs an adopter that can continue to expose him to new sights, sounds and experiences in a positive way. Something in Stetson's past has made him wary of men, so he would do best in a female household or with a man willing to put in the time and work to earn his trust. Once he's comfortable, Stetson is a happy boy with a lot of playful puppy energy. He's looking for an adult-only home with an adopter experienced with this breed. For more information about Stetson, please fill out an online adoption application. Sponsored By: Jennifer, Allen, Mayday and Lulu |

Chiquita sponsor me Chiquita is an older dog but she's no couch potato! With a waggy tail and plenty of energy, Chiquita loves going for long walks, nose to the ground in the best Beagle fashion. Chiquita came to AFRP from the Monterey County Shelter after coming in as a stray in early September. She's about 8 years old and appears to be mostly Beagle, with perhaps some Dachshund thrown in there too. She gets along fine with other dogs, but is interested in chasing cats, so would do best in a feline free household. She's a nice medium-sized dog, weighing about 20 pounds. If you are the family Chiquita has been waiting for, please fill out an online application. Sponsored By: Cheryl and Steve Runyon in memory of our sweet girl Gracie and all the other dogs that have been in our life |
Jewel sponsor me Jewel is a bundle of fun, frisky puppy energy! She's a 10-month-old, 8-pound Jack Russell Terrier mix who can't wait to have a home of her very own. Jewel came to us from the Hayward Shelter after coming in as a stray with a fractured hind leg. She has healed up very nicely, and walks and runs without a trace of a limp. She's a bright and active pup who loves to wrestle with her foster friend Bizzy, also on web, and play tug-of-war and fetch. Jewel has a fancy name but she's a bit of a tomboy and doesn't mind playing hard and then cuddling in your lap when she's all tired out. Watch out, she's the queen of doggie kisses and will cover you with smooches if she gets the chance! She loves people and kids (older kids best due to her size and energy level.) If you are interested in meeting Jewel, please fill out an online adoption application. Sponsored By: Shipwright in honor of Scuffy |
Pixie sponsor me Pixie is a darling 2-year-old, 12-pound Chihuahua mix who came to AFRP from the Salinas Animal Services after coming in as an injured stray, possibly hit by a car. Thankfully, Pixie has healed beautifully and is ready to experience the comforts of having a home and family of her own. A little bit tentative when exposed to new things, Pixie will do best with a patient adopter who can continue her socialization by taking her everywhere and showing her that the world is a happy and wonderful place. Pixie absolutely loves doggie treats, which will be a great help when teaching her new behaviors. This little gal is ready to become your best friend! For more information, please fill out an online adoption application. |

Spreckles sponsor me Named for the cute scattering of freckles on her face and paws, Spreckles is an 8-month-old, 42-pound mixed breed pup who came to us from the King City shelter after being picked up as a stray. We are guessing she's a Australian Cattle Dog mix, with perhaps some Dalmatian and pit bull in there too. Sweet, funny and playful, this friendly girl wants to be best friends with everyone she meets. She's looking for a committed family who can make her part of their daily lives and take her to obedience classes. Spreckles is crate trained, house trained and knows basic obedience commands. She'd do best with an experienced adopter with another playful dog companion she can romp with. For more about Spreckles, please fill out an online adoption application. Sponsored By: Laura Plouchart |
Thor Thor's epic adventure began on the streets of Salinas, and landed him in the Monterey County Shelter when he was picked up as a stray. No tragic ending for Thor, though -- his saga continues as he searches for a family to call his own. A sturdy 4-year-old, 8-pound Chihuahua/Terrier mix, Thor is confident, friendly and eager for adventure, whether it's a walk through the forest or a ride in the car. He is crate trained and sleeps all night without a peep. Thor is a bit too eager to chase cats, so would do best in a feline-free home. He loves men, women and kids, and would be a great match for anyone looking for a loyal, smart little friend who is very eager to please. For more information about adopting Thor, please fill out an online adoption application. |
Rourke (Adoption Pending) Rourke is ready for a home! This handsome 2-year-old, 45 pound purebred Boxer has been through a lot but is just as sweet as can be. Hit by a car in August, Rourke had two badly broken hind legs. One was pinned and plated, and the other leg needed to be amputated. Rourke is now getting around very well on three legs, though prefers not to go up and down steep stairs. Currently in foster care, Rourke enjoys the company of other dogs, is house trained and crate trained and especially loves playing with stuffed toys and balls. He's learning to walk on the leash and is a good traveler in the car. He'd be a great match for a family with a single level house and yard, preferably with another friendly dog pal. For more info about Rourke, please fill out an online adoption application. |

Boomer sponsor me Boomer is deaf, but that doesn't stop him from enjoying life to the fullest! He's a bright, good-natured 5-month-old Dalmatian mix who came to AFRP from the Monterey County Animal Services after coming in as a stray in September. Incredibly smart and focused, Boomer has already learned several hand signals in the short time he's been in foster care. He gets along great with other dogs and has lots of happy puppy energy. Boomer is looking for an adopter who is committed to continuing Boomer's education and ensuring that he becomes a wonderful ambassador for deaf dogs. For more information about Boomer, please fill out an online adoption application. Sponsored By: Simon Chavera |
Figgy sponsor me Figgy has rebounded from a stretch of bad luck. Abandoned and possibly hit by a car, Figgy came to us from the Salinas Animal Services after coming in with a broken jaw and some general tenderness. Being in foster care has done wonders, and now this handsome 3-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua is feeling fine. If he had a tail, it would be wagging with happiness 24/7! Figgy is house trained and sleeps quietly in his crate at night. He loves treats and has started attending basic obedience classes. He has some reduced vision in his left eye, which is smaller than the right and has an old cataract. He gets along fine with other dogs after being properly introduced. For more about Figgy, please fill out an online adoption application. |
Danny sponsor me Danny is a 1-2 year-old, 8-pound Chihuahua/Dachshund mix who came to us from the Salinas Animal Services and has been in foster care with his best friend Maggie, also on web. Danny gets along great with other dogs, but can be a bit shy around people he doesn't know. Maggie brings out the best in him and is helping him become less shy. He is most comfortable with women, and can be timid around men and small children. Danny loves to play and go for walks. He is crate trained and house trained to use a doggie door. Danny and Maggie are best friends and spend the day playing, wrestling, chasing and then napping together on their bed. They can be adopted together or separately. For more information please fill out an online application. |

Dustin sponsor me Looks like Dustin got tired of waiting for Santa to come down the chimney and fell fast asleep! This lil' cutie pie is a special 2-year-old, 5-pound Papillon who came to AFRP from the Salinas Shelter and is currently in foster care in Santa Cruz. He has a slight neurological problem which causes him to be a bit clumsy at times, but that doesn't stop him from being a wonderful lap dog who loves giving little kisses and will paw at you to ask for more lovin'! Dustin gets along fine with other small dogs but would do best in a home with no cats. Due to Dustin's small size and special needs, he needs an adult adopter and no dogs in the household over 10 pounds. For more information, please fill out an online application. |

Shasta would do best in a home where she won't be left alone for long periods of time. Sascha Sascha is a 1-2 year-old, 45-pound German Shepherd mix who had been abandoned in the hills of Watsonville and was emaciated and limping badly when rescued. Sascha underwent FHO surgery to repair her hips, and she is now doing great and walking, running and playing with no pain. Currently in foster care, Sascha gets along great with other dogs, and walks nicely on the leash. She can be a bit shy in new situations and with new people, so will need an adopter who can help Sascha continue to build her confidence level. Neville sponsor me Neville is a super friendly 7-year-old red Min Pin/Chihuahua mix and weighs about 10 pounds. Neville originally came to us from the Monterey County Shelter and was adopted shortly after. Sadly, Neville's family recently had to move to an apartment that does not allow pets, so he was returned to our care. Neville is an alert, active and intelligent dog who gets along great with other dogs and with children. He'd do best in a home with no cats. Neville is house trained and is a wonderful lap dog who is easily corrected and eager to please you. He loves sleeping under the covers! He'd love to join a family where he'll get plenty of love and attention. For more information about Neville, please fill out an online adoption application. |

Walks and other adventures are lots of fun and she's always ready to go. Ellie is in good health, although she does have a heart murmur that was detected at the time of her spay. Oscar sponsor me Little Oscar is a sweet and friendly 6-year-old, 5-pound Chihuahua mix who came to AFRP from the Salinas Shelter after arriving as a stray in need of medical care. When you meet this lil' guy, you'll just want to scoop him up and tell him everything is going to be okay. Oscar had extensive dental work done, plus surgery to correct severely luxating patellas (kneecaps) on his hind legs. He currently walks very gingerly on his long, fragile legs, and resembles a foal just learning to walk. With time, Oscar will gain strength and move better as he becomes accustomed to using his corrected hind legs. Oscar also has a condition called paraphimosis, which means he has difficulty fully retracting a rather delicate part of his anatomy - put his gun back in his holster, so to speak. This will require an adopter with fortitude, dexterity and a bit of lubricant to keep everything in the correct place. If you are interested in adopting this very special dog, please fill out an online application. |
Hershel (Adoption Pending) Hershel's foster mom calls him the "happiest dog on earth!" This 1-year-old, 12-pound MinPin/Dachshunnd mix has a tail that never stops wagging. People that meet him say that he looks just like a miniature Chocolate Lab. His favorite toy is a squeaky soccer ball and he has lots of goofy puppy energy. Hershel is great at playing fetch and enjoys playing with other dogs. He is respectful of cats. A quick learner, Hershel is already crate trained and house trained, and knows how to sit for a treat. He's working on his leash-walking skills. Hershel lost his home when his person passed away. He's currently in foster care in Santa Cruz. For more information, please fill out an online application. |
Ginger Dressed in pink and full of love, Ginger is ready to be your Valentine! She's a 5-6 year old, 5-pound Papillon/Chihuahua mix who loves to snuggle and enjoys the company of men just as much as women. Ginger came to AFRP from the Monterey County Shelter. Her teeth had been neglected, so she was whisked off for a dental to make her smile pretty and healthy. Ginger is a bit shy upon first meeting, but she warms up once she gets to know you. She is house trained and sleeps and eats happily in her crate. A fair weather girl, Ginger doesn't like to get her paws wet, and prefers to use a potty pad on rainy days! She gets along fine with other dogs but does want to chase cats. Ginger would do fine either as a single dog or in a multi-dog household. Due to her small size, no young children please. For more information, please fill out an online adoption application. |

Most likely a Dachshund/Chi/MinPin mix, Happy is ten pounds of doggie love. She lives for belly rubs, lap time and snuggling under blankets. A perfect lady on the leash, Happy is also crate trained and house trained. Her foster mom calls her a total "velcro dog" for the way she follows her all around the house. Happy is a super sweet and loving dog who gets along with everyone from retirees to kids over age five. She is good with other dogs after a proper introduction, but would also be perfectly happy as a single dog in the home. She is unknown with cats. Bowie Bowie, also known as "Puppy" is a 3-year-old, 50-pound retriever/husky mix. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines. Bowie belonged to the son in the family, who is moving away soon. Bowie is not an AFRP dog. Olivia Olivia is a happy, bouncy 5-year-old Chi-weenie (Chihuahua-Dachshund). She is very well-behaved, house trained, and settles down very quickly. She enjoys playing with stuffed toys and a good game of tug-a-war. She will do minor tricks and dance about for a treat and is only vocal when playing. She gets along with other animals, including our cat and other foster dog. She is quick to find any child in the vicinity to pal around with, or crawl into anyones lap. Olivia really blossoms at the dog park where she can run around and make new friends. When she first arrived from the shelter she had some issues with resource and lap guarding, but she has improved. Olivia is not an AFRP dog and is in the care of CAPE. For more information please call her foster mom at 831-713-5514 or (707) 330-6610. For adoption in Santa Cruz County, CA only. |
Mabel Mabel is a 10-ish year old spayed female lab mix found as a stray about two months ago. She is very sweet and loves everyone she meets. She gets along well with cats and other dogs. Because she is older, she is pretty lazy and spends most of her time sleeping. She does have some arthritis and most likely has Cushing's (An overactive Adrenal Gland) but this is a chronic condition that she has been dealing with for some time. It basically makes her drink more than the usual amount of water and causes some muscle weakness. We are looking for an adopter that would like a low-maintenance dog with a slow-paced lifestyle. Would you like to give this sweet old girl a second chance? If so, call 859-433-7832 or email Blaire at bcullman-clark@westernu.edu |

Gilligan Gilligan is a 5-pound neutered male Rat Terrier. What he lacks in size, he makes up with a great personality! He is completely potty trained, loves to snuggle on the couch, is great with kids, other dogs, the family cat and even was gentle with the neighborhood kid's pet rabbit. When Gilligan gets a treat, he does an amazing cookie dance that brings giggles from anyone who has the honor to view it. Although we think Gilligan would be GREAT in any home, because of his small size, he may be better in a home without small children. In the time we have known Gilligan; we have heard him bark perhaps 3 times. He is a treasure in a small furry form. For adoption in Santa Cruz County, CA only. Gilligan is not an AFRP dog. For more information call his CAPE foster mom at (831) 713-5514 or cell (707)330-6610. |

Bella Bella is a 2 1/2 year old blue nosed pit bull. She has recoered from possibly from being hit by a vehicle on Santa Anna Road, Hollister. It was very apparent that she had given birth to puppies several months before. Who else would use this dog for breeding, but back yard breeders. Bella is completely healed, has a clean bill of health, and is spayed. She is currently a guest at The Dog House Inn, Gilroy. Bella is accepting of some dogs, but we feel she will be best suited as an only dog. Bella is a GREAT family dog, good with children, will make an excellent family pet. She is housebroken and crate trained. If you truly love this breed and are qualified, willing to give her a forever home. We would love to hear from you. Call ACGSRescue of Hollister at (831)636-7559 or email Viv. |
Gigi Gigi's story is very sad, she was discovered living with the body of her deceased owner, in conditions that were unfit even for humans, that was 2 years ago, she has been in foster care ever since. Gigi is very sweet and loving, yet independent in her own way. She loves to go for walks with the other dogs in the foster home, who are much bigger than she is. Enjoys riding in a car. Gigi has a way of greeting that makes her foster Mum feel very special. If you have cats in your home, that is not a problem for Gigi, as she lives with cats too, given the chance she loves to sneak a mouthful from their bowls. If you want lots of love, kisses, and a loving little dog in your life, please consider giving Gigi a home. This is one very special senior dog, who would be a perfect match for a retired person or couple, or someone who works part time. Please contact ACGSRescue of Hollister at 831-636-7559 or email Viv. |
