AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested

AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have 5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.

In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you.

Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly.

AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Meet Pebbles! She's a happy and wiggly 3-month-old, 3-pound Chihuahua/Terrier mix puppy looking for a loving home. Pebbles came to us from South Monterey County after being left behind with her mother (Wilma on web) when their family moved away. They were covered with fleas, had no food or water, and had nothing but an old wine barrel to sleep in. Despite her rough start, Pebbles is a fun and friendly pup who loves to play with other dogs of all sizes and is eager to learn new things. Due to her delicate size, adult adopter or family with kids over 12 preferred. Click here for an online application.

Slinky
sponsor me

Slinky is a shy, sweet 6-year-old, 6-pound Dachshund/Chihuahua mix who just wants a lap and some love. She has spent the last two years kenneled in a vet clinic's office, and as a result she needs help getting re-socialized to the big outside world. She is crate trained and sleeps quietly at night, is fast becoming house trained and has recently learned to use the doggie door. She co-exists fine with her foster's dogs, and is just starting to engage in play activities, zinging around the house and carrying toys. She's very food motivated and is learning how to "sit to say please." Slinky would be great for an older adopter or adult family that wants a quiet, loving companion. Slinky's adoption fee is $150. Click here for an online application.

Dixie Doodle
sponsor me

With all the charm of a southern belle, Dixie would invite you in for a glass of iced tea if she could! Dixie is a 1-year-old, 13-pound Chihuahua/Dachshund mix who came to us from the Salinas Shelter, where she was a staff and volunteer favorite. She came in with an old, untreated injury to her front leg which permanently fused her joint in a bent position. It does not cause her any discomfort or hinder her activity. Dixie has wags and smiles for everyone she meets, and loves nothing more than a nice lap to snuggle on! She gets along great with other dogs and would be a great match for a household without small children or cats. Dixie's adoption fee is $150. For more information about meeting or adopting Dixie, please fill out an online application.

Tucker
(Adoption Pending)

What a smile! Tucker is a bright and cheerful 2-year-old, 22-pound Border Collie mix with perhaps a pinch of Husky or other Northern breed thrown in for good measure. He was found in King City after living for over five weeks on his own. No wonder he's enjoying his time in foster care so much! Tucker loves snuggling on soft dog beds and chewing his favorite antler or stuffed toys. He LOVES playing with other active dogs and needs a home with a dog buddy. He will do best with an adopter that can provide him with plenty of mental and physical activity. Click here for short video. Tucker rides nicely in the car, does not chew, jump or dig in the backyard and is working on his crate and potty training. Understandably, he's still a bit timid with new people and situations, but once he warms up you won't find a more loyal or loving friend. Tucker's adoption fee is $300. Click here for his online application.

She'll be happiest in a quiet adult household with another dog companion to hang out with. Suzie's adoption fee is $150. For more information about meeting or adopting sweet Suzie, please fill out an online application.

Rollo
Posted 7-24-15. Rollo is an amazing 6-year-old, 100-pound neutered Malamute/Shepherd mix looking for a new home. He is affable, jolly, active and highly intelligent. With additional training, he would likely make an outstanding agility dog. He is a bit dominant and too rambunctious with the cat and other dogs in his current home, and is likely best in a home where he is the only pet. Rollo is house trained and is a super smart dog that knows his basic obedience commands and more. He'll thrive with a big backyard and a daily half-hour walk or run. Rollo exhibits some resource guarding behavior and will do best in an experienced adult household. Rollo is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in Carmel Valley. Milk Dud
Posted 7/22/15. Milk Dud is a 10-year-old Lab/Shepherd mix. She’s shy at first, but once she’s known you for a day or two she warms right up. That’s when her beautiful personality shines through. Milk Dud is playful and loving, always ready to curl up next to you or follow you from room to room to keep you company. She’d be a great fit for a retired couple or older person living alone who’s looking for a kind companion. She loves to go on leisurely walks and is great on a leash. Jex
Posted 7/16/15. Jex is a 10-year-old, 92-pound Ridgeback/Doberman mix. He’s a big boy with a big heart who gets along well with everyone—adults, children, other dogs, and cats. Jex is still pretty active for an older gentleman, though his bad back does slow him down a bit. He has a hard time with stairs and dogs who play rough. He’s house-trained, crate-trained, and knows his basic commands. He’s basically a big sweetheart of a boy who’s looking for a nice place to spend his twilight years. He still has a lot of love to give. Jex’s family situation recently changed and they can no longer take care of him. Jex is not an AFRP dog. To get to know Jex, please contact Cerene at 801-842-8672 or email cereneshepard@gmail.com
Mariah
Posted 7/16/15. Mariah is an 8-year-old Pit Bull Terrier. She is super sweet and adores being around people, especially if they give her a little massage. She loves other dogs, too, and passed her dog-to-dog evaluations with flying colors. A smart lady, Mariah knows “sit” and “shake” and just learned “down.” She’s not as fond of “fetch,” but that’s likely because she could stand to lose a few pounds. Mariah is not an AFRP dog. To meet Ms. Mariah, contact Salinas Animal Shelter at 831-758-7285 and reference her ID number: A089140. She’s currently on the adoption floor and looking for her new, loving home.
Sugar
Posted 7/16/15. Sugar is a 10-year-old, 48-pound Border Collie. She loves people and will follow you wherever you go, happy to hang out and watch TV, go for a car ride, or go for a walk. A dainty lady, Sugar gently takes treats from your hands. She likes other dogs and tolerates cats as long as they don’t push her limits of patience. If they do, she will happily give chase and is just as happily, and easily, called off. She is house-trained and crate-trained and does well on a leash. Sugar even knows her basic commands. She’s a typical smart and sweet Border Collie. Sugar has mild arthritis in her rear half, but losing weight and getting a little more exercise may help her condition. Sugar’s guardian moved into assisted living and couldn’t take her along. To meet Sugar, please contact Sandra at 530-626-5326 or tobigal@yahoo.com
Sophie
Sophie is an 80-pound, 12-year-old Lab/Shepherd mix. She’s a pretty dog with striking blue eyes that garner a lot of attention. Sophie is curious and friendly around strangers—we’re not sure what she thinks of cats. For the past few years, Sophie has been the only dog at home. That means she can be a little protective of her food. Otherwise, she’s a friendly gal. She adores being outside as much as possible and even likes sleeping under the stars. Sophie’s house-trained, so she can stay inside, too, with no trouble. Overall, she goes with the flow and is a low-stress doggie. Sophie is not an AFRP dog. For more information, contact Katherine at (831) 818-8446 or katherineharperwork@gmail.com

When a willing foster stepped up we rescued this precious one from the shelter. Nellie is 7 years old, Papillon cross. She is great with dogs of all sizes. She is 14lbs, crated trained and is being fostered in the Santa Clara area. Nellie is not an AFRP dog and is currently in the care of All Creatures Great and Small of Hollister. Amelia
"I'm Amelia, a 2-year-old, 50-pound spayed female Border Collie mix from San Jose, CA. I’m your best friend indoors and have enough energy and love to go around. I love to cuddle up! I love to play ball, although my favorite part of that game is 'keep-away!' I am micro-chipped and up-to-date on all my shots. I am very obedient and housebroken, though when I get too excited or anxious I may lose focus, have an accident, or look for something to chew. I must admit, however, that I do have anxiety and fear issues that cause me a lot of trouble on walks, or when meeting new people. I really need a home with no dogs and no children, and hey, a big fenced backyard certainly doesn’t hurt! With the right attention, consistent structure, and regular exercise I will be your best friend and perfect companion." Amelia is not an AFRP dog. For more info please email Andy at andy.dill@gmail.com
Boo Boo
Boo Boo is a true gentleman! He's a 7-year-old neutered male Cocker Spaniel with an extremely laid back and loving personality. He is great with other animals and with kids. He's a low energy dog and would be perfect for a senior. Boo Boo has the beginnings of cataracts in his eyes, so his vision is a bit impaired. She is very attentive and eager to please (especially for a delicious treat) and would make a great companion for a single pet family. Baby is up to date on her vaccinations and had a full dental cleaning in November. She was taken to a vet clinic to be euthanized for unspecified aggression issues, but the person who brought her in couldn’t give any examples of aggressive behavior. The owner finally agreed to relinquish Baby to the clinic under the love and care of the staff. Since then, Baby has shown no aggression toward people. She hasn’t been tested around other dogs, and she’d probably do best in a home where she’s the sole pet. Baby is enjoying her second chance at life and is ready for her forever home. Baby is not an AFRP dog. If you have room in your heart for this sweet girl, contact Melissa at (714) 713-0935 or npreceptionist@irvinevetservices.com.
Sheba
Sheba is a 38-pound, 8-year-old Shepherd/Cattle Dog. She’s a special girl with special needs looking for a special person to take care of her. She likes small children but prefers them on a one-on-one basis. Small, non-aggressive dogs are okay, too. Sheba tends to ignore cats. She walks well on a leash and has her basic commands down pat. At night, she sleeps under the bed or in her recliner chair. Sheba has separation anxiety for which she takes a small dose of Prozac. She’s been on this medication since October of last year and seems to be feeling much better. She can be left home without incident as long as she’s not crated. If you’d like to meet her, contact Ryan at ryan.j.easton1@gmail.com or (757) 803-5422.
Luna
Luna is a sweet 9-month old Pit Bull puppy. She is social and friendly, with a desire to please. She gets along well with our 2 cats and our neutered male Lab/Retriever Mix who is fairly calm. Luna has lots of energy and loves to play and go for walks. She is quite the lap dog! Luna has lived with our family since she was 10-weeks old. All was well until a couple months ago, when Luna and our female Pomeranian/Terrier Mix began antagonizing each other. They are not able to get along now, and we have to keep the two of them separated. We received a behavioral consultation from Trish King, CPTD, CDBC of Canine Behavior Associates. Trish King recommended that Luna be placed in a home with a calm male dog, if possible. She said that Luna should not be placed with a bossy dog, particularly a female. Luna would do well in a one-dog home. Luna is not an AFRP dog. For more information, please call 831-325-8490 or email Patty at pdf20@hotmail.com

He functions quite well, is very brave, adventurous, even inspirational really as he began going blind around 3 years old. He enjoys playing with other dogs once they become familiar to him. He would do best with another dog to keep him company and guide him. He has a tendency to become aggressive (growling/barking - not biting!) to the unfamiliar (people and animals), which we attribute to his blindness. Capone is looking for a new home because we have two young children, and we are a bit uncertain about his behavior with young children. He is house-trained, walks on a leash daily, neutered and up to date on his shots. Capone is not an AFRP dog. To meet him, email valerie.e.merrell@gmail.com

Unofficially I am 9 1/2 years old, 43 lbs, current on my vaccinations, flea prevention, and spayed. Don't let my age fool you. I'm very energetic and would make an ideal hiking or walking buddy. Not only do I enjoy a bit of exercise, but I love car rides too. I'm great with kids and used to live with children that were 15 mo and 11yrs old. Although I've lived with other pets and currently live with two cats, I'd like to try being an only dog. I listen well and know my basic commands, but sometimes I can forget when I get very excited. I'm housebroken and usually stay inside. I don't really like crates, but I love a comfy couch. I'd settle for a warm blanket too. My previous owners moved to where they could not take me, but I'm very friendly towards people and I guarantee my favorite place will be sitting right next to you showering you with kisses. Princess is not an AFRP dog and is located in Fremont, CA. Please contact Genelle at 719-310-9304 or genelle_chapman_98@yahoo.com
