AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested

AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have 5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.

In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you.

Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly.

AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Jerry
Jerry is a calm and wise 8-year-old, 8-pound Chihuahua mix who came to us after being found as an abandoned stray in the Santa Cruz area with a younger dog named Ben (now adopted). Jerry gets along nicely with other dogs (will chase cats that run) and loves every person he meets. Currently in foster care, Jerry is crate trained and enjoys going for walks. He loves to curl up with you on the couch for a snuggle! Jerry sucessfully underwent heart surgery on 9/25/13 to treat a congenital condition called aortic stenosis. He has had his recheck with the cardiologist in October, he's now ready for his new home. He is feeling good but does need to continue with a daily heart medication. We'd like to thank everyone who donated to make Jerry's lifesaving surgery possible. Read more about Jerry. For more information about meeting or adopting Jerry, please fill out an online adoption application.
Taters
sponsor me

Taters is an 8-year-old, 10-pound Westie/Chi mix who came to us from the Salinas Animal Shelter in 2009. She suffered from severe allergies, and her coat was sparse and her skin was red, thickened, itchy and uncomfortable. It has taken years of trial and error, but Taters has finally found relief thanks to a combination of special diet and medications. She is now a happy little character who enjoys meeting new people and running errands with her foster mom. Taters is house trained and crate trained, and gets along nicely with respectful cats. She's looking for a special adopter who can keep her on her strict diet and medication regimen to ensure her health and happiness. Read more about Taters. For more information about meeting or adopting Taters, please fill out an online application.

Zippy
sponsor me

Zippy is a 2-year-old, 12-pound Chihuahua mix who was rescued by a kind citizen after being abandoned in a neighborhood and living on handouts. Currently in foster care, Zippy is a sweet little guy who could spend all day on your lap if he could! He walks nicely on the leash and is doing great with house training. Zippy gets along great with other dogs and does fine with dog-savvy cats. He's a playful little guy who loves his chew toys and stuffies! Zippy is treat motivated, which should be helpful in teaching him his basic obedience commands. He's a bit bashful with young kids, but would do fine in a household with adults or older kids. Read more about Zippy. For more info about meeting or adopting Zippy, please fill out an online application.

Brownie
sponsor me

Brownie is a sweet little princess who is looking for a vacant lap or two. She adores humans who are kind and gentle with her and she will dance on her hind legs to ask for your attention; she also bestows quick little kisses once she knows you a bit. Rescued from the shelter in a state of neglect, Brownie has recovered from flea allergy dermatitis and her coat is now thick and shiny. She will need to be kept on flea preventative and also an inexpensive medication for her thyroid. House trained and crate trained, Brownie will be a lovely addition to a quiet, Chihuahua-loving home. Brownie can live with other dogs and cats too, but she really wants to be the center of attention and could be very happy as a spoiled "only child." Her age is estimated to be somewhere around 6-8 years. For more information about meeting or adopting Brownie, please fill out an online application.

Shasta
sponsor me

Shasta is a 8-year-old sable Australian Shepherd who came to us from the Salinas Shelter. She weighs about 45 pounds. Shasta loves attention and will lean against your leg in hopes of getting more petting! She enjoys going for rides in the car and for daily walks. Shasta would do best in a home where she won't be left alone for long periods of time. She can get nervous in busy situations and needs an experienced adult aussie handler with good leadership skills. She is protective of her home. Shasta successfully lives with other dogs but prefers to play with small dogs. No cats or children, please. Shasta is currently in foster care in Santa Cruz. For more information, please fill out an online adoption application. Read more about Shasta.

Willa
sponsor me

Willa is a charming 5-year-old, 12-pound Chihuahua mix who came to AFRP from the Monterey County Shelter. Quiet and well-behaved, Willa is the perfect companion for sofa-snuggling, taking for a walk around the neighborhood, or running errands in the car. Currently in foster care, Willa has proven to be house trained and is an easygoing and undemanding companion. Her personality is blossoming and she now plays with her doggy toys and does a happy dance when it's dinner time. Willa recently saw the veterinary ophthalmologist, and was diagnosed with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). This means her vision will continue to decline over the next few years until she is blind. Read more about Willa. If you are interested in adopting Willa, please fill out an online adoption application.

Honey
sponsor me

Honey is a 3-year-old Dachshund/Terrier mix with a very sweet and gentle disposition. She was rescued from the Walmart parking lot where her owner were trying to give her away. It was clear that Honey had not had the best life. She was thin, had fleas and ticks on her and was very timid. We suspect she was a neglected backyard dog. Now comfortable in her foster home she is really blossoming into a great little companion. Honey would do well in almost any home. She loves to play with other dogs and gets along fine with cats. She is happiest when she is snuggled up next to her person. If you are interested in opening your home and your heart to Honey please fill out an online application.

Mimsy
sponsor me

Mimsy is a sweet 5-year-old, 8-pound Chihuahua mix with a lovely caramel-colored coat. She came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as a stray. Mimsy's personality was shut-down in the scary shelter environment, but now that she's in foster care, her confidence is growing. New situations can still be stressful for her, but she wants to please. Mimsy approches softly to ask for love and attention. She gets along nicely with other dogs and cats, and is not a barker. She will continue to blossom in a quiet and gentle environment. Mimsy would love another small dog to share her life with. Please open your heart to this gentle, sweet soul. You won't be sorry! For more information about meeting or adopting Mimsy, please fill out an online application.

Leon
sponsor me

Leon is a 4-year-old, 5-pound Pomeranian who came to us from a vet clinic in Tracy after being surrendered by his previous guardian. He's currently in foster care in the Santa Cruz area. He's a bit fearful when he's in new situations and when he meets new people, but once he has bonded to his person he is an absolute love bug who wants to be by your side 24/7. Leon is house trained and walks nicely on his harness and leash. He gets along with other dogs but needs a home with no cats. Leon is partial to women but is slowly learning to trust men too. Leon needs a patient, experienced adopter who can help him resolve some separation anxiety issues and can help him learn that he can trust people. An adopter with experience working with abused dogs in need of behavioral training and attention would be ideal. Adult adopter only. For more info about meeting or adopting Leon, please fill out an online adoption application.

Lucinda
sponsor me

Lucinda is a teeny-tiny 3-year-old Chihuahua mix and only weighs 4 pounds. She was born with a condition called microphthalmia which means her eyeballs are smaller than normal. She was visually impaired when she first came to us, but has gradually gone completely blind. Lucinda is a super-friendly little dog who dances on her hind legs when you talk to her. She enjoys being held and is a great lap dog who also loves playing with other small dogs. Due to her small size and vision issues, Lucinda would do best in an adult household with a safe, consistent environment. A one-level house would be ideal. For more information about meeting or adopting Lucinda, please fill out an online application.

Lexi
sponsor me

Lexi is a sweet 3-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix in need of a second chance. She originally came to AFRP as a stray puppy from the King City area, and was adopted in 2010. Sadly, her family recently lost their home and Lexi returned to our care. Lexi gets along great with other dogs and enjoys playing with them, but she is at her best when she's a single dog in the home. Her foster mom calls her the best dog in the world! She's calm, patient and quiet and would spend all day curled on your lap if given the chance - pausing to gaze adoringly into your eyes and reach up to give you a little kiss. Lexi is in foster care with multiple cats, and she completely ignores them. This bright girl is house trained and crate trained, and loves going for walks. Read more about Lexi. For more information about adopting this lovely lap dog companion, please fill out an online adoption application.

Major Jack
sponsor me

Major Jack is a sweet and gentle 3-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix who was surrendered by his family to a local vet clinic when they were unable to care for him. Currently in foster care, Jack is doing great. He tends to choose a favorite person and is extremely loyal and loving with that person (he prefers women). Once he's bonded with you he greets you with a happy dance and loves sitting on your lap and carefully taking treats from your fingers. He's timid with new people and new situations, and will do best in a fairly calm and quiet adult household where someone is home much of the day. He is house trained and gets along fine with other dogs. Looking for an utterly devoted best friend? Jack is your guy! For more information about meeting or adopting Major Jack, please fill out an online adoption application.

Hope
sponsor me

Hope is a 3-year-old, 9-pound Shih Tzu who was found as an injured stray in Tulare. She was completely paralyzed in her hind legs. The shelter there reached out to AFRP, and Hope is currently doing well in foster care in Santa Cruz. It has taken some time, but Hope is now walking on her own (a little wobbly) and should continue to improve. In the meantime, she loves to be held, cuddled and carried like a baby! This sweet girl gets along great with other dogs and loves people. If you have room in your heart for a special little dog, please give us a call or fill out an online adoption application.

He's a very fun dog at home, and loves all toys, especially tennis balls and plush squeakies. Very social with other dogs, Gopher could play all day with the other small dogs in his foster home. He is house trained and listens well. He'll do best in a home where he is not left alone for long hours. For more info about meeting or adopting Gopher, please fill out an online application.

Merritt
sponsor me

Merritt is a darling 2-year-old, 9-pound chocolate and tan Miniature Pinscher who came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as an injured stray. Hit by a car, Merritt suffered a severe fracture of her right hind leg, and a degloving injury to her left hind leg. Sadly, the right leg was very damaged and needed to be amputated. Her left leg has healed nicely, and although her paw might always look a bit abnormal, she is very fortunate to have the use of her remaining hind leg. Merritt is good with other dogs, enjoys going for rides in the car, and loves people. Her favorite activity is curling up on your lap, where she can snooze for hours! Due to her small size and fragile limbs, adult adopter preferred. Merritt is in foster care in Santa Cruz. For more information about meeting or adopting her, please fill out an online application.

Carter
Carter is a 7-year-old, 75-pound blind pit bull looking for a home as special as he is. Adopted from a shelter, he was recently returned when his family decided having a blind dog was too much work. Carter adores people but is especially fond of women. His great goal in life is convincing you to rub his belly! Carter will wag his tail and say hi to anyone who approaches. Barking is something he directs at squirrels - he knows when they're around! Carter would like a person who does not get flustered when he runs into things. Carter is house trained and knows sit, although his preferred body position is curled up in his bed. Unable to see important visual cues and unable to give them, Carter sometimes flubs social interactions with other dogs which can lead to scuffles. If you have a laid-back, older dog who can tolerate a large dog bumping into him or her, Carter might appreciate the companionship. But really, Carter just really loves people. Carter is not an AFRP dog. For more info please email e-mail: dogward4 him@yahoo.com or visit www.capeanimals.org

Grasshopper is a 7-year-old, 5 pound Chihuahua. He is the sweetest little guy, but he does stress out a bit in public. He is very quiet and fits in easily with other dogs, and we expect, cats too. He does have a slightly hunched back, and although xrays cannot determine anything clinical, we suspect there is some mild neurological stuff going on, as his back legs are a little weak and he can be somewhat wobbly, or tip over. He doesn't do well on too many stairs. Grasshopper is deserving of a wonderful home. He is in the care of Motley Zoo rescue in Washington. He has transportation to the Monterey area if he finds a forever home in this area. Grasshopper is not an AFRP dog. for more info email: info@motleyzoo.org or call 206-453-8480.

He and his brother Blue (also on web) lived on a patio and received little attention or love, since they were a business venture. The two dogs were rescued, neutered and started their rehabilitation, but sadly their new owner's health declined and she can no longer care for them. They are gentle dogs, just shy and unsure of themselves. These dogs are looking for a patient person who can continue to work with them and help them gain confidence. Itty Bit and Blue need to be adopted together. They are not AFRP dogs. For more information please call Lisa at 831-393-1944 or 831-214-5536.
CJ
CJ is a 13 year old, friendly, attentive, and handsome Rat Terrier who's guardian is having serious health issues and is needing to find a new loving home for CJ. He has been neutered, is current with his vaccines, and is in good health but for a bit of arthritis. CJ is good with other dogs and with children, isn't a barker, really enjoys his exercise and walks politely on the leash. The neighbors all love him and say what a delightful boy he is. CJ is not an AFRP dog. If you would like to meet CJ, please contact info@peaceofminddogrescue.com.

Great match for an adult household or family with kids over age 8 with the time to give him plenty of love, attention and exercise. He needs a home without cats or other small animals. Bailey is crate trained and is eager to go in his crate to sleep at night. Bailey is not an AFRP dog. For more information please email Mary Josephine at MMortoncai@aol.com

Gigi
Gigi's story is very sad, she was discovered living with the body of her deceased owner, in conditions that were unfit even for humans, that was 2 years ago, she has been in foster care ever since. Gigi is very sweet and loving, yet independent in her own way. She loves to go for walks with the other dogs in the foster home, who are much bigger than she is. Enjoys riding in a car. Gigi has a way of greeting that makes her foster Mum feel very special. If you have cats in your home, that is not a problem for Gigi, as she lives with cats too, given the chance she loves to sneak a mouthful from their bowls. If you want lots of love, kisses, and a loving little dog in your life, please consider giving Gigi a home. This is one very special senior dog, who would be a perfect match for a retired person or couple, or someone who works part time. Please contact ACGSRescue of Hollister at 831-917-5570 or email Viv.
