AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested

AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have 5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.

In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you.

Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly.

AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Willow is a 2-year-old terrier mix and is the mother to the puppies Alex, Frankie and Teddy, also on the web. She was probably backyard dog and is lacking the social skills she should have learned as a young dog. Willow was an excellent mother and enjoys being petted. She is potty trained to go outside, and has started some leash training. She gets along nicely with other dogs and has formed a lovely bond with Andie, the other mother dog in her foster home. Willow is looking for a very patient adopter with the time to work with her and help her gain confidence. Click here for an online adoption application.

Andie
sponsor me

Andie is a sweet and shy 2-year-old black and tan Chihuahua/Minpin mix who was dumped near the Monterey County Shelter after hours. A field worker found her puppies when they were just a few days old, and the shelter staff used the puppies as bait to capture Andie. Currently in foster care, Andie has been a wonderful mother and has a very sweet personality. Now that her puppies are grown, she's ready for a home of her own. She's a very shy girl and needs an experienced and patient adopter that can continue to help her gain confidence. She is house trained and knows how to walk on the leash. Click here for an online application.

Winnie
sponsor me

Winnie is a 2-year-old, 11-pound red Dachshund mix who came to us from the Monterey County Shelter after arriving as a homeless mama dog with two puppies to raise. Currently in foster care, Winnie has settled in nicely and is doing great with crate training and house training. Her legs may be short, but she is a fun and bouncy girl who can jump high in the air when excited! Winnie gets along nicely with other dogs, and could live with a confident, dog-savvy cat. Winnie can be a bit shy with new people and new situations, and will do best with an adopter that can help her continue to build confidence. Click here for an online adoption application.

Sadie and Little Bear
sponsor me

Sadie and Little Bear are adorable 6-year-old Chihuahua mixes who lost their home due to a family emergency. They are extremely bonded, and do everything as a pair! They never auditioned for American Idol, but they love to sing, and will join in when you serenade them in a high voice! These adorable little lap dogs are crate trained and enjoy going for short walks. They can be a bit nervous at first, but once they trust you they are affectionate, loyal and loving little friends. Two-for-one $150 adoption fee applies to this pair. For more about meeting or adopting Sadie and Little Bear, please fill out an online adoption application.

JoJo
sponsor me

JoJo may have some grey in his muzzle, but he has lots of years of love to share! He's an 8-year-old Chihuahua mix who came to us from the Salinas Shelter and is eager to spend his retirement years in a loving home. JoJo has a mellow and easygoing energy level, and is happy to hang out on his dog bed or snuggled on your lap. A short walk around the block is plenty of exercise for this little guy. He's content to sniff the flowers and enjoy your companionship. JoJo is good with other dogs. For more information about meeting or adopting him, please fill out an online adoption application.

Grant
sponsor me

Grant is a lovable 1-year-old, 12-pound Chihuahua mix with a prance in his step and a full-body wag! He's a great playmate with other dogs and loves all sorts of toys to play with and chew on. He has attended puppy classes with his foster mom, and is a smart boy who learns quickly. He is playful with confident cats, but might be tempted to chase a timid cat. He is house trained, crate trained and walks enthusiastically on the leash. Grant will reward his adopter with affection, kisses and lots of smiles. Click here for an online adoption application.

Paisley
sponsor me

Paisley is a petite 3-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix looking for a lap! She came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in with a broken leg and pelvis. Paisley underwent extensive orthopedic surgery with plates and pins to stabilize her fractured bones, and thankfully she has made a wonderful recovery. It is understandable that Paisley now looks out for her own well being, and she is not fond of other rowdy dogs or unpredictable children that might play too rough. She'll do best in a calm and quiet home with a lap all to herself. Paisley is house trained and walks nicely on the leash. For more information, please fill out an online application.

Simba
sponsor me

Simba (from the Swahili word for lion) is a regal 1-year-old, 14-pound Chihuahua mix who would love to rule your household from the top of your lap! Simba came to us from the Monterey County Shelter, where he was a staff and volunteer favorite. He's a super friendly, polite and playful little guy who loves to play with his toys. He's the king of belly rubs! Simba enjoys going for walks and would love to join you for outings and errands. Simba loves adults but is a bit fearful of children. He will thrive as a single dog in an adult household. His adoption fee is $150. For more information about meeting or adopting Simba, please fill out an online application.

Marla is house trained, crate trained, knows sit, high five and lay down! She gets very excited when she sees other dogs and just wants to run over and play! She adores kids and is great with other dogs - unknown with cats. She loves swimming, going for walks and playing ball. She's an outdoorsy girl by day and wants to be your cuddle bug by night. Anya
Posted 9-19-16. Anya is a deaf but well trained 7 year old, 30lb spayed blue merle Border Collie/Aussie that our family adopted from friends that were moving to China last May. She has perfect manners in the house, on leash, and with our 4 young children, but has remained fixated on our 3 cats. We are looking for a loving, cat free home for Anya. Anya would be perfect for almost anyone: families, couples, retirees... She is a quiet, calm dog, not your typical Border Collie Aussie. She follows hand commands from our children, and is very patient. With new people, Anya is curious and friendly. Healthy, micro-chipped, up to date on immunizations, and crate trained. Anya comes with two crates, leashes, harness, food bowl, grain free food, and several months of flea medication. We live in Salinas, but are happy to meet on the Peninsula for a playdate. Anya is not an AFRP dog. For more info contact Cori at 831-484-4358 or email corilynngentry@gmail.com

Posted 9-12-16. Miss Kitty is an adorable, energetic, loving and loyal 3-year-old, 45-pound Australian Cattle Dog mix. She needs lots of exercise and loves to run in the woods and fetch balls and pine cones. Her guardian loves her, but Miss Kitty can be unpredictable with children and certain dogs. She might be a wonderful farm or ranch dog and has some herding instincts. She loves adults and enjoys attention from men. She is a sweet girl looking for a lifestyle that better suits her needs. Miss Kitty is not an AFRP dog. For more information please call or text Debbie at 831-333-6143 or email debmonkeypaws@gmail.com
Leela
Posted 8-31-16. Leela is an 8-year-old, 63 pound spayed female Boxer/Husky mix. She has a fabulous personality and gets along well with all other animals, kitties included! She can be bashful when first introduced to a new person, but once she's realized they're her friend she's all about getting some affection. She's a sweetheart of a dog. Leela would also do well with gentle children, although she can topple very small children because of her enthusiasm about playing with them. At night, she sleeps quietly on the floor. Leela's guardian is moving to take care of an aging parent, and can no longer care for her. If you'd like to meet Leela, please call Carol at (916)752-2596 or (530)741-9172.
Buttons
Posted on 8-30-16. Buttons is a 9-year-old, 16 pound Schnauzer who is looking for a new home. This pretty gal is house-trained, walks well on a leash and even knows some basic commands. Buttons is fine socializing with dogs for short times while she's out and about, but can feel a little territorial in her home and might do best as the only dog. Her ideal forever home would be with a quiet person or couple who will shower her with affection. The energy level of children scares her a bit, so no young kids would be best. Buttons is a very sweet girl looking for the perfect situation so she can thrive and be herself. She is not an AFRP dog. If you're interested in meeting her, please call Vicky at (831)601-6961.
Mafeo
Posted on 8-22-16. Mafeo is an 8-year-old, 20 pound neutered Pug/Beagle mix who was abandoned in a box on someone's property. He's a shy guy who gets along well with other dogs. When he meets new people he's very shy and needs a patient guardian who is willing to gain his trust. Mafeo tends to ignore cats when he sees them, so it's possible he'd be fine with a kitty in his future family. Mafeo is crate trained and walks really well on a leash. Mafeo needs a second chance at finding a loving family - can you help? He is not an AFRP dog. If you'd like to meet Mafeo, please contact Loryn at (352)598-4429.
Kiki
Posted 8-15-16. Kiki is a 3-year-old, 45-pound Beagle mix who was found at a Buddhist retreat center with an injured leg. She has now healed and is a wonderful house dog who loves her human buddies. Kiki has impeccable house manners and is house trained and does well with other dogs. She'll do best in a home with no cats. Kiki is spayed and is up to date with her vaccinations. She loves her treats, yummy meals and a soft bed, which she never had in her previous life. Kiki is not an AFRP dog. For more information contact CAPE at 831-336-4695. He does well with other dogs and especially gets along with female dogs. He enjoys meeting new people and does fine with strangers coming into the house. He has lived with young children and is fine with them. He also does fine with cats. Oso is an overall great dog. His family loves him very much and are heartbroken about having to give him up. With small children in the house and Oso's blindness, they think he'll do better in a home where he'll get more attention. Oso is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in Sacramento. For more about Oso call Cassie at 530-701-5836 or email cassiem202@gmail.com
Kylie
Posted 7-18-16. Kylie is a lovely 14-year-old, 40-pound Shiba Inu mix in need of a new home due to her guardian's illness. She is spayed and house trained. Kylie has lived with other dogs, cats and children over her lifetime. She knows her basic commands and walks nicely on the leash. She has never bitten or snapped at another animal or person. She is a quiet dog but does bark to alert you to someone at the door. Kylie is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in San Jose. For more information please contact Trudy at 408-529-9988 or email trudy@bayareahealth.net
Becky
Posted 7-13-16. Becky is a 2-year-old Chihuahua mix and is still very puppy-like! Becky is hearing impaired, but very bright and motivated to learn using hand signals. Most people have no idea that she's not a "normal" hearing dog. Despite her confident, friendly nature, she is initially shy with new people and dogs. She is very wary of hands reaching for her, and will dart away. This made it challenging for potential adopters to see her true personality in the shelter setting. In foster care, however, she has revealed herself to be a lovable goofball! She is good with dogs, will chase cats that run, and will do best in a home without young children. Becky is not an AFRP dog and is in the care of the Santa Cruz County Shelter. For more info email foster mom: stephanne.caverly@gmail.com
Wrigley
Posted 7-12-16. Meet Wrigley! He's 12 pounds and about 6 years old. He is cautious meeting new people, but if you sweet talk him, be patient and feed him yummy treats, he will be your best friend and follow you everywhere. He is a real love bug and adores treats and cuddles. He enjoys playing with his chew toys, as well. Wrigley is crate-trained, potty trained and sleeps soundly through the night. He is good with both male and female dogs, small to medium sized; not tested with large dogs or with kids or cats. He's a medium-activity kind of guy - happy with a few zoomies a day, whether he is seeking adventure or a soft lap to sit in. Neutered, current on vaccinations. Wrigley's adoption fee is $250. Wrigley is not an AFRP dog. If you'd like to meet Wrigley, please email info@srdogs.com.
K.C.
Posted 6-28-16. KC (the black and tan teddy bear) and Myst (the Blue Merle beauty) and are sweet, well-behaved senior Aussies with hearts of gold. They have a foundation of training - both competed in agility in their younger days - and are now ready to settle into a comfortable, loving home where they can put their cuddle-training into daily use! At 15 years young, Myst and KC are very alert and mobile. They do have some diminished hearing and vision loss, but are otherwise healthy and neither require medications. Their lives have been spent as indoor/outdoor dogs in a multi-dog household. They were bred by their owner, who has sadly passed away. Myst is on the shy side but it doesn't take long before you'll see just how sweet she is. These two are strongly bonded so it would be AMAZING if they could be placed together, but this is not a requirement. If you'd like to meet them, please contact Lu at (805)610-7585.

Inyo
Posted 6/17/16. Meet Inyo, she’s a super happy 3 year old mutt (shepherd, lab, rot mix?). We adopted her from a shelter 2 months ago. She is very loving with people, and enjoys good belly rubs! She very well behaved; calm inside the house, gets along well with our cat, is potty trained, and doesn’t chew or bark. She knows some basic commands, is a quick learner and has already picked up a lot since we’ve had her. She is healthy, micro-chipped, spayed and up to date on shots. She is working really hard on training, including 1:1 private training and weekly socialization classes. She is making progress, and would greatly benefit from continued training with her new family. She can be reactive with dogs she does not know, but she has done well on walks with friend’s dogs if she gets a slow introduction. For more info contact Sophie at (831)234-9944 or email Sophie.slosberg@gmail.com
Kahlua
Posted 6/17/16. Kahlua is a 5-year-old, 50 pound Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix. Kahlua is house-trained, walks well on a leash and is super friendly with new people. He waits patiently at home while his guardians are at work and would probably be a great companion for someone with the energy to take him for walks or hikes. He is somewhat blind in his right eye. He sleeps on the floor at night near his person. Kahlua probably needs to be an only-dog in his future household because he doesn't get along with most dogs. His current guardians love him very much but they've moved into housing that is not pet-friendly and they can't keep him. If you'd like to meet Kahlua, please call Maria at (831)293-4555.
Dog Trio
Posted 6/17/16. Two Bundles of Golden Love with one Wheaten Terrier for good measure! Celeste and Julie are both 10 years old. Amy is a senior Wheaton Terrier. All three of these girls have lived together forever and are VERY bonded. We are looking for someone special who would like to adopt them as a trio! Their owner is dying, she wants very much for her girls to go to a loving home. Celeste (the English Cream Golden Retriever) excels at dancing and singing! She's an instant dose of happiness. Julie loves to play fetch, snuggle and gives lots of TLC. Amy is diabetic but totally precious. Can you give these sweet girls the loving home they deserve? These are not AFRP dogs. If you'd like to meet them, please email Gayle at gaylejaxon@gmail.com
Miley
Posted 6-16-16. Miley is a friendly 7-year-old, 42-pound Husky/Collie mix who was adopted as a puppy in Hawaii and is now in need of a new home. She’s a great dog who gets along nicely with other dogs and cats. She is a great hiking partner and enjoys outings to the dog park or the beach, where she loves to play a game of fetch. Miley is well behaved in the house and is a loyal and affectionate friend. She underwent surgery to remove bladder stones, and is feeling much better. Unfortunately as a result of the surgery, she can be slightly incontinent at night. Miley is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in Seaside. For more information please call Elizabeth at 831-595-1160 or email elizabethrammel@gmail.com
PeeWee
Posted 5-25-16. Pee Wee is a 9-month-old, 8-pound spayed female Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua mix. She is playful with the other dog in her household. At first she can be a little shy but once she knows the other dog is friendly, she's great. She'll bark to alert you that someone is at the door but once they come inside she's their new best friend. Pee Wee really loves to sleep with her person and is a great cuddle buddy. She is house-trained and walks well on a leash. She has never lived with a cat but it's possible with a proper introduction she may be fine. Pee Wee's guardian was homeless and abandoned her with her current caretaker. If you'd like to meet Pee Wee, please contact Michele at (831)676-7455.
Achilles
Posted 5-12-16. Achilles is an 9 year old, 70lb cattle dog mix. He has a gentle, kind, shy soul but has unfortunately been through many homes recently through no fault of his own. Because of this and his breed mix, Achilles will always be slow to warm up to new people but is interested and does bond with you after just a few days. He will reward you with a little happy dance and some "stump-waggin'" whenever he sees you! All this guy really needs is a comfy corner spot in a stable quiet home environment again! Achilles is fully housebroken, crate-trained, treat motivated, good on leash, tolerant of other dogs, and a quiet companion. He just wants to be near his people again so would be happiest in a home with a full-time adult caretaker. As a shy dog, Achilles is not suitable for a noisy, busy environment and is afraid of most children. He's looking for a retired couple to follow around again for exercise and some comfy dog beds for rest. Achilles is not an AFRP dog. Please contact Diana at (510) 333-4420 or theperfectdogrescue@gmail.com

His family loves him but work full time and have two small children, and they'd like to see him get the daily exercise and attention he deserves. Leica is not an AFRP dog and currently lives in San Francisco. For more info call Zindzi at 415-420-7646 or email flipperlounge@gmail.com
