AFRP Dogs Looking for Homes - Call (831) 333-0722 if you are interested

AFRP's dogs are cared for in foster homes. If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please call or email first before coming down to the adoption center. On any given day we have 5 to 10 dogs at the center, not ALL of our dogs are on site.

In order to ensure that we make the best match for a dog with a new family, potential adopters are required to go through an interview process, fill out an application, and have a home check done by one of our volunteers. We do not do same day adoptions. After meeting one of our dogs, it might take up to a week before the adoption process is complete and the dog goes home with you.

Please call (831) 333-0722 or email info@animalfriendsrescue.org if you are interested in adopting an AFRP dog and we will have the foster volunteer contact you directly.

AFRP only adopts out dogs that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $200-$300. The adoption fee helps to cover the cost of the care the animal has received, including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and flea treatment. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP dog to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Some say blind dogs see with their hearts, and that is certainly true for Champ, a 6-year-old, 12-pound Shih Tzu who simply wants to love and be loved in return. Champ endured a life of neglect and ultimately needed to have his painfully damaged eyes surgically removed. Being blind does not prevent Champ from living life to the fullest, and he enjoys going for walks, likes to romp at the beach and loves to socialize with other dogs and cats. Most of all, he loves snuggling on your lap or being cradled in your arms. Champ is trained to use a potty pad and is very good at negotiating his surroundings . He is in good health but does eat a special diet for dogs with sensitive skin. For more about meeting or adopting Champ, please fill out an online application.

She'll do best in a calm and quiet home with a lap all to herself. Paisley is house trained and walks nicely on the leash. For more information, please fill out an online application.

Miss Jet
Posted 12-1-16. Miss Jet is a 6-year-old, 50-pound German Shepherd. The first thing you should know about her is she loves people. The second thing you should know about her is she really, really loves people. This dog never met a stranger. Within moments of greeting her, you have a new best friend who's happy to go wherever you do - on rides in the car, out for a walk, or just relaxing at home. Miss Jet is house-trained, spayed and UTD on shots. She would thrive as the center of your attention as the only pet in her family. To meet Miss Jet, please contact Peace of Mind Dog Rescue at (831)718-9122 or visit their website at www.PeaceOfMindDogRescue.org

Holly would likely be fine with a dog-savvy kitty in her new family. She does have a sensitive tummy and needs to avoid certain foods. Holly has been a loved dog the last 10 years and hopes to find a great forever home. Holly is not an AFRP dog. If you're interested in meeting her, please contact Roberta at (831)435-8248.
Lilac
Posted 11-21-16. Lilac is a wonderful 3-year-old German Shepherd. She is a people dog, loves children, housebroken, will happily jump in a car to go for a ride, all in all she is a happy and healthy dog. Lilac's life has not been easy, after bouncing from one shelter to another. She is somewhat dog reactive, based on fear, but has not attacked or bitten another dog. The BEST home for Lilac would to a family/couple where Lilac is the ONLY DOG (NO CATS PLEASE)...she will make a wonderful addition to a family who is familiar with her breed. We would like to find a family/couple/person who is willing to take Lilac to classes and continue making her feel comfortable around other dogs. Given her breed she will require daily walks, so an active family/couple/person is the best placement. Lilac is not an AFRP dog an is in the care of All Creatures Great and Small of Hollister. Call 831-917-5570 or email vivatacgsinc@aol.com
Tonka
Posted 11-21-16. Tonka is 3-4 years old tri-colored Doxie/Chihuahua cross. He came to us from Hollister Animal Shelter, where he was left in the night box in May. Tonka is such a happy go lucky little dog, always has a smile on his face, a little shy at the first greeting, but give him a chance, he will warm up in no time. He gets along very well with other dogs of his size. Loves to ride in a car. Is crate trained, does well on a leash. We would love for Tonka to find a forever home for the holidays, he has been a guest of The Dog House Inn since May, too long for him be without the comforts of a home. The staff at DH Inn all say he is so sweet and easy to handle. If you are looking for a small dog (under 12lbs) to add to your home, give us a call so we can introduce you to adorable handsome Tonka. Ruby and Spot
Ruby and Spot, bonded 3-year olds, were rescued last year while running in traffic at the I-5/Santa Nella interchange and are being fostered in a private home in Aptos. Ruby is a gorgeously comical rust/white "Yoda" terrier and Spot is a highly intelligent Australian cattle dog hybrid. They both have been spayed, de-wormed, and have had rabies vaccines. They sit quietly to have their nails trimmed, and get along with cats. They've learned to sit and walk either individually or on a tandem leash. They've been taken out on trail rides with a horse with great success. They love to hike and run off leash and come when called. They love being petted and cuddled! They seldom bark, but do need a home with a yard where they can play, and would be a great match for a jogger or avid hiker or other active human. They have recovered nicely from their trauma, but need someone with a kind heart and soft voice as it's evident they were beaten. If you'd like to meet Ruby and Spot, call 831.688.1387 or email meg@nonprofitdev.com

K.C.
Posted 6-28-16. KC (the black and tan teddy bear) and Myst (the Blue Merle beauty) and are sweet, well-behaved senior Aussies with hearts of gold. They have a foundation of training - both competed in agility in their younger days - and are now ready to settle into a comfortable, loving home where they can put their cuddle-training into daily use! At 15 years young, Myst and KC are very alert and mobile. They do have some diminished hearing and vision loss, but are otherwise healthy and neither require medications. Their lives have been spent as indoor/outdoor dogs in a multi-dog household. They were bred by their owner, who has sadly passed away. Myst is on the shy side but it doesn't take long before you'll see just how sweet she is. These two are strongly bonded so it would be AMAZING if they could be placed together, but this is not a requirement. If you'd like to meet them, please contact Lu at (805)610-7585.

Inyo
Posted 6/17/16. Meet Inyo, she’s a super happy 3 year old mutt (shepherd, lab, rot mix?). We adopted her from a shelter 2 months ago. She is very loving with people, and enjoys good belly rubs! She very well behaved; calm inside the house, gets along well with our cat, is potty trained, and doesn’t chew or bark. She knows some basic commands, is a quick learner and has already picked up a lot since we’ve had her. She is healthy, micro-chipped, spayed and up to date on shots. She is working really hard on training, including 1:1 private training and weekly socialization classes. She is making progress, and would greatly benefit from continued training with her new family. She can be reactive with dogs she does not know, but she has done well on walks with friend’s dogs if she gets a slow introduction. For more info contact Sophie at (831)234-9944 or email Sophie.slosberg@gmail.com
Kahlua
Posted 6/17/16. Kahlua is a 5-year-old, 50 pound Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix. Kahlua is house-trained, walks well on a leash and is super friendly with new people. He waits patiently at home while his guardians are at work and would probably be a great companion for someone with the energy to take him for walks or hikes. He is somewhat blind in his right eye. He sleeps on the floor at night near his person. Kahlua probably needs to be an only-dog in his future household because he doesn't get along with most dogs. His current guardians love him very much but they've moved into housing that is not pet-friendly and they can't keep him. If you'd like to meet Kahlua, please call Maria at (831)293-4555.

Achilles
Posted 5-12-16. Achilles is an 9 year old, 70lb cattle dog mix. He has a gentle, kind, shy soul but has unfortunately been through many homes recently through no fault of his own. Because of this and his breed mix, Achilles will always be slow to warm up to new people but is interested and does bond with you after just a few days. He will reward you with a little happy dance and some "stump-waggin'" whenever he sees you! All this guy really needs is a comfy corner spot in a stable quiet home environment again! Achilles is fully housebroken, crate-trained, treat motivated, good on leash, tolerant of other dogs, and a quiet companion. He just wants to be near his people again so would be happiest in a home with a full-time adult caretaker. As a shy dog, Achilles is not suitable for a noisy, busy environment and is afraid of most children. He's looking for a retired couple to follow around again for exercise and some comfy dog beds for rest. Achilles is not an AFRP dog. Please contact Diana at (510) 333-4420 or theperfectdogrescue@gmail.com

He loves food, other dogs, trail runs, outdoor adventures and looking into your eyes while sitting on your lap! Cody is not an AFRP dog.
