AFRP only adopts out cats that have been spayed/neutered. The adoption fee is $150 which helps to cover the cost of all care the animal has received, including their spay/neuter, vaccines, microchipping, and FIV/FeLV testing. Adopters are encouraged to take their new AFRP cat to one of our participating vets for a free wellness check (see list of participating vets).

Poland

Poland is a super-affectionate 2-year-old orange tabby with soft, medium-long fur and a gorgeous fluffy tail. She came to us as a young stray mama cat with a litter of kittens to care for. She raised her family in foster care and was an excellent mother. Now her kittens are adopted and Poland is ready for a home of her own. She's playful, curious and loves to be brushed. She enjoys following you around and will hop on your lap when you sit down. Offer her a kitty treat and she'll be your friend forever! She is good with other cats and dogs. Poland has an autoimmune skin condition called Pemphigus, and is on a very small dose of prednisone. She will need to be monitored for her lifetime. Read more about Poland. Hope and her friend Mercy, also on web, are 1-year-old blind cats who came to AFRP from a rescue organization in Vietnam. They are gentle and healthy cats that had been used as practice subjects for veterinary students learning eye removal techniques. The Kairos Coalition arranged for Hope and Mercy to make the journey to AFRP to give them a chance to recover and find their forever homes. Hope is a very sweet and petite girl with the coloring of an Abyssinian. Though completely blind, her other senses are very acute and she is able to map out her surroundings and even play with kitty toys! Hope and Mercy are looking for a safe, indoor home with an adopter that can give them the rich, happy life they deserve. They will do best without other dogs or cats in the household. They are gentle and healthy cats that had been used as practice subjects for veterinary students learning eye removal techniques. Winston is large, slender and athletic 2-year-old brown tabby who was adopted from AFRP as a kitten, and recently returned to our care when his owner could no longer care for him. Peacock
Tripods rule! Peacock is a beautiful 7-month-old grey tabby with a soft and fluffy medium-long coat. He came to us from Peacock Acres, which is a residential care facility for foster children in Monterey County. He had been hit by a car, and suffered a badly broken hind leg that ultimately needed to be surgically removed. Autumn
Autumn will put you in the mood for warm sweaters, hot cocoa and evenings by the fireplace! She's a cuddly and playful 6-month-old light brown tabby with a beautiful coat. She came to us after being found abandoned outside a local vet clinic. She's a super sweet cat who loves people and gets along fine with other cats. Ready to be your best friend! Rex
Rex is a stunning 1-year-old Maine Coon mix who was adopted from AFRP as a kitten, and recently returned to our care when his family had to move overseas. He has a big personality and is very outgoing and friendly to everyone. Rex enjoys playing in water and is good with kids and other cats. Eileen is a gorgeous 7-month-old Snowshoe Siamese mix kitten who came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as an injured stray. She was holding her head in a tilted position - either a result of head trauma or an untreated ear infection. Eileen has finished a course of antibiotics and her head is still tilting, so she may always have that "inquisitive" look! Blackie orginally came to AFRP from Best Friends Animal Society in Utah back in 2006. He was soon adopted, but something in his life went wrong, and Blackie was picked up as a stray and ended up at the local humane society. His owner could not be found, so he recently came back into our care for another chance. Fans of older black cats will appreciate his slightly tattered ears and his long vampire fangs! Simmy is a gorgeous 10-year-old declawed brown tabby with dramatic white markings. She and her best friend Indy (also on the web) lost their home when their family moved and could not take them along. She was originally rescued as a young kitten that had been thrown from the window of a moving car. Simmy loves to sit on your lap and knead her paws, enjoys laying in the sun and looking out windows. Cinderella is a gorgeous 1-year-old tortie point Siamese mix who came to us after being surrendered to the emergency clinic. The head of her femur was broken, and she underwent orthopedic surgery to repair the fracture. Happily, Cinderella has made a wonderful recovery and is ready for her forever home. Bug is a sweet 4-year-old declawed black cat who lost her home when her owner passed away. She went to live at the home of a relative, but living in a busy household was very stressful for her and she started over-grooming and hiding. This nice little cat loves to be stroked and scratched on the head. She has been through a lot, and will do best in a calm and quiet home as a single pet. Sofia is a gentle and friendly 18-year-old tortoiseshell looking for some love in her golden years. She had been living on the streets of Carmel after being abandoned by a former guardian. Several Carmel families made sure she had daily food and water, but when she was hit by a car last month, Sophia came into our program. Fortunately she was bruised but not broken, and she has made a wonderful recovery. Like many senior cats, Sofia has kidney issues and is on a special diet. She also requires subcutaneous fluids every other day. She is looking for a special adopter or foster volunteer experienced with caring for senior cats. Munson is a 4-year-old longhaired tabby who had been abandoned and was living on handouts at an apartment complex. When one of the residents found him sick and lying flat in the gutter, she rushed him to the vet. Munson had suffered a urinary blockage that required immediate attention. He also had a broken hip and required FHO surgery. Thankfully, he is feeling much better and has healed beautifully. He loves having his long silky coat brushed and combed, and gives happy head butts when he's ready for some attention and petting. Beth is a tiny 16-year-old tuxedo girl who came to us from a rescue group in Los Angeles that had to close down. Sadly, Beth had been at their shelter since coming in as a semi-feral mother cat when she was only 1 year old. She is fine being near people but does not like to be touched. Though Beth is completely deaf, she greets you with a cute meow when you bring her food or kitty treats. She gets along fine with other cats, and enjoys snoozing in her bed or watching the world from a windowsill. Presley is a darling 1-year-old polydactyl (extra toes) torbie who came to us from the Monterey County Shelter as an injured stray. She had a painful open abscess at the base of her tail that needed to be surgically repaired. Thankfully, Presley has healed beautifully and she's ready for her forever family. She has a super sweet temperament and loves to be held and petted. Her new family will need to trim her nails regularly to prevent ingrown toenails. Sierra is a sweet 1-year-old tuxedo cat with silky, medium-long fur. She was found begging for food outside the Sierra Mar restaurant at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur with her litter of tiny kittens. A volunteer went out to trap the cats, but it turned out that Sierra was not really feral at all, simply stray. Sookie is a 9-month old who is the ultimate tomboy kitty! She loves to have time outside (accompanied by her people!) where she can climb trees and bask in the sun. Her other favorite things are chasing you to the bathroom so she can hop up to the sink for a drink of fresh water, followed by playtime and splashing. She likes her own freshly-laundered place to sleep, and comes running for breakfast when she is called. Check out those eyes! Mint Julep came off the streets of south Monterey County as a young feral kitten. He was placed in foster care and now at 9 months he has become a wonderful house kitty. Mint Julep gets along great with well mannered dogs and most cats. He can get very possessive about his food when he's around other cats - probably a holdover from his days as a hungry street kitten. Tootsie is a friendly 4-year-old brown tabby looking for love! She came to us from a rescue group in Los Angeles that had to close down. Before that she lived with a family that had to surrender her due to some landlord problems. Tootsie loves to rub up against you to ask for petting, and enjoys chasing feather toys. She is not overly fond of other cats, and would be in kitty heaven as your one-and-only kitty friend. Jet is a sweet and petite 12-15 year-old black cat who is ready for her luck to change. She lost her home when her owner became ill. With nobody to care for her, she wandered the grounds of a senior housing complex in Carmel Valley until being rescued by a concerned citizen. Jet is a very gentle and affectionate kitty who just wants a quiet home and a warm lap. She gets along fine with other friendly cats. Jet has been diagnosed with kidney failure and is on a special diet and subcutaneous fluids. If you have a soft spot in your heart for senior kitties, you'll love Jet. Smokey is a friendly 14-year-old senior cat who came to us from the Salinas Shelter after coming in as a stray with severe dental disease. He had ulcerations and badly infected gums which made it very difficult for him to eat. He coped by scooping up a bits of wet food with his paw, and then gingerly licking it off. He was treated with antibiotics and underwent several extractions, but may always need to be monitored for mouth issues related to stomatitis. This sweet boy also has a heart murmur and needs daily medication for hyperthyroidism. He's looking for a cat lover experienced with caring for senior felines. Smokey is currently in foster care. He is a Compassionate Choice Cat, adoption fee waived to a qualified adopter.

Lazy Daze

Lazy Daze is a six-year-old orange female. She gets along nicly with other cats and with cat-friendly dogs. She is an alpha female so she holds her own. She is still very skittish with people but does tolerate petting after she gets to know you. Lazy Daze has had her lower teeth removed as she has a form of stomatitis and may need to have her uppers also removed at a later date. She still eats very well and feels much better now that the painful teeth have been removed. She would love a quiet indoor home where she can learn to bond with her new family. Outdoor Cats
Do you have a ranch, barn, greenhouse, workshop or studio that could be a safe haven for a feral cat or two? We often have a few cats in our care who have lived their whole lives outdoors, and are not comfortable in our adoption center. They will have already been spayed/neutered, and immunized. If you can provide food, water and shelter for feral cats who needs a safe, secure outdoor home, please contact us. Luke is a handsome 1-year-old Lynx Point Snowshoe Siamese mix looking for a loving home. He loves people and kids, and is an indoor cat with perfect litter box manners. Megs is a 12-year-old spayed female British Shorthair. She's a quiet girl with a grumpy demeanour, but a sweet soul. She likes to be nearby and supervise, but does not demand attention. She prefers to approach you rather than be approached. She is not a snuggle kitty, but if you are patient, she will sit in your lap and purr like a motorboat. She loves interactive play with her mouse-on-a-string toy. She is healthy and current on vaccinations, and her breed is typically robust and long-lived. Tiger is a 6-year-old neutered male brown tabby in need of a loving home. He is a very sweet boy who likes to spend time outside during the day and come inside at night. Benjamin
Benjamin is a super friendly 4-5 year old neutered male black cat who showed up at a home in Castroville one year ago. The resident made sure he had food and water, and took him to the vet to see if he had a microchip. (He did not.) Benjamin got his shots updated and did test positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). This means that ideally Benjamin should live as an indoor house cat. FIV cannot be transmitted to people or dogs, and can only spread to another cat through a deep bite wound. Can you help Benjamin's luck change by offering him a home? He is not an AFRP cat. Squeaks is a beautiful 13-year-old spayed female brown tabby in need of a loving home. Her owner had Squeaks since she was a kitten, but sadly needs to relocate and cannot take Squeaks along. Zorro is 7-year-old spayed female black cat looking for a loving home. Grumpy is much more cheerful than her name! She's a 5-year-old, 12-pound spayed female grey cat who is looking for a loving home. Maggy is a wonderful 1-year-old spayed female orange tabby who was rescued as a pregnant stray by a kind citizen. Maggie had a litter of six kittens, and now that they have been raised, she's ready for a home of her own. Maggy is a well mannered, friendly and playful cat who is potty trained and does not scratch anything but her scratch pad. She has been living in an office situation with two dogs and is fine with kids and visitors. She is an excellent mouser and gopher hunter. Max is a 2-year-old neutered male brown tabby who was rescued from the streets and is now a playful and trusting little guy who loves attention. He is a talkative character with lots of personality. Max tested positive for FIV, which means he should be an indoor only cat. He is neutered and up to date on shots. FIV cats can live long and healthy lives, and can live with other friendly animals. Skippy
Skippy is a 14 year old male Snowshoe Siamese. He is a little shy at first, but once he knows you he loves to be a lap cat. Skippy grew up with a dog so could probably live with a dog who respects cats. Skippy's elderly guardian has Alzheimer's and is in a care facility. A family friend took over caring for Skippy 4 years ago, but now she is also elderly and broke her hip and his having trouble caring for Skippy as well. Skippy is not an AFRP cat.
